Great mystery but I took off one star because Maisie Dobbs is such an irritating character.

I’m finding each installment of the Maisie Dobbs series to be more enjoyable than the last. This books, like its predecessor, was impeccably researched and shone a spotlight on shell shock, the treatment of the mentally ill soldiers and civilians in post World War I England, and the research and development of chemical weaponry both before and after the war.
I loved that the Special Branch of Scotland Yard tagged Maisie in for help on the case, further validating her business and her methods of investigation. I also enjoyed that she had the chance to meet the Prime Minister! Robert MacFarlane is a wonderful foil to Maisie’s character and I hope we will see more of him in the successive installments.
Boxing Day sees Maisie interrupted at her father’s house by Detective Chief Superintendent Robert MacFarlane as he requests her assistance on a case that could have deadly consequences for many in London. As Maisie finds herself personally named in a threatening letter delivered by an unknown man to the Prime Minister promising mass destruction and loss of life she must race against the clock to determine what connection she might have to the suspect and how to stop him.

I have been trying to get into this series, but the character is so unlikeable and finally the story was too depressing for my liking.

Fabulous!! Maisie enters the larger world of Special Services and their interest in chemical warfare. She also develops an interest in photography.

I have a soft spot for Maisie so my review might be a bit partial. I enjoy another episode of this wel written and intriguing story. I love the historical setting, the unfolding of the investigation and the stories behind the main subject. I am not disappointed and I will certainly continue to the next chapter
