This was a pretty good retelling of one of my favorite Disney movies! LOVE the fairy lore especially, and how it gives Aurora a lot more agency.
I think the weakest parts were the scenes taken directly from the movie, however. I understand that the novels are meant to present the story exactly as we know it with additional context to the prince's story, but I do wish the author had been given the freedom to tweak the dialogue a bit to better match the amazing characterization she'd built for Phillip especially in the rest of the book.
I do highly recommend this book for any one who loves the original movie.

This book is geared toward a teen male audience with open discussion about confidence and self esteem.
Moderate: Sexism
3.5
Philip and Aurora are the blank slates of the Disney couple universe for Disney writers. (Though admittedly, more Aurora than Philip, we still get a better sense of him than we do Snow White's or Cinderella's respective prince's) They don't have much screentime in their own movie, so we only have a vague grasp of their characters.
The fairies are the real protagonist of Disney's Sleeping Beauty, so it gives people using Disney's Sleeping Beauty IP a blank check on how to write Aurora and Philip's personalities.
And what Miller went for was...giving Philip a typical male YA fantasy lead personality, and Aurora a typical female fantasy YA lead personality? And not to mention a pretty typical YA fantasy plot and twists?
It wasn't a bad book, but it was a little too reliant on YA tropes and not that original. There were some things I did like, I did feel that Miller did make an effort to give Aurora a personality that made sense, even a bit of a cliche one, for her background and character. There were some cute moments, but that's kind of it.
I've seen much worse uses of Disney's Sleeping Beauty IP, so this is pretty decent, but no more than cute.
Can't really give it any higher than 3.5

The gorgeous cover, which caught my eye first, is easily the best part of this book, which loves the movie very much but wanted to write its own framing story that in the end doesn’t mean much.
It’s nice that Briar Rose and Philip get to know each other better earlier but other than that this poor book just ambles quietly from brief action scene to brief action scene, and as nice as those action scenes are they ultimately don’t mean anything since it all turns out to be a lie to Philip, making the whole book feel like a waste of time.
Resounding meh. Some good scenes, but overall mostly empty. Cute enough for the big Disney fan, but not strong enough to stand on its own.
