I, unfortunately, did not resonate with this. I understand that it is a shonen, and therefore made for young boys, a demographic I am not part of, but I found this to be incredibly juvenile. I did not find it particularly funny, although you could tell it was trying to be. None of the characters were especially charming, most of which the two main characters, whose names I have forgotten already. I'm sure the sports manga elements will shine later into the series, but I have no interest in getting that far. It's also weirdly violent (for lack of a better word) for its highschool setting, which I think is supposed to be comedic, but did not land for me. And as a final, personal note, I wasn't the biggest fan of this artsyle. I'm sure it gets better later on, but I have no interest in continuing this series, nor am I interested in watching the anime, after reading this.

Pretty basic setup but with good art, occasional funny jokes and cool moments. The characters aren't amazing yet but I for sure see the potential

Though I've heard good buzz on its popularity elsewhere I'm sorry to say it hasn't caught on at my library just yet. With its brashness and macho sporty title (better than Prince of Tennis, no? I feel like it's only a matter of time. Hanamichi Sakuragi goes from brawler to baller at his school when Haruko, a cute basketball fan helps him realize he's got untapped talent. Sakuragi finds out all too soon though that the road to being a hot shot is not without its complications. He has to find a way to curb his hotheadedness when the domineering team captain is Haruko's brother, and her longtime crush, the current star of the team, is his new teammate. Familiar themes for sure, but entertaining nonetheless. My only gripe is the art--the basketball players, and all the men in the manga really, are all built like linebackers...ridiculously squared off behemoths, and the third-year students all look vaguely like grizzled hitmen or mobsters from a Cagney movie more than high school students. An odd look, but fitting for a manga story that wants to assert its machismo at every turn.

Age Appropriateness (vol. 1) 10+
In volume one there's no sex, innuendo, or fan service, so it really all depends on one's feelings about good old-fashioned fisticuffs. There's quite a bit of fist-fighting, though no swords, no guns, no one dies--in today's video game entrenched world, that's practically equivalent to a bit of impolite shoving.

Not sure how to feel about the captain-monkey comparisons, but I’m really excited to continue this series - loved the setup for all the characters : )
