I must say this was a marvellous collection in my opinion. I loved almost every single story but especially The Human Chair, The Cliff and The Traveler With The Pasted Rag Picture. I am a little disheartened by the representation of disability and the flatness of the female characters (dare I say Rampo writes women like he has never been near one) but you cannot win them all. An overall enjoyable read.

Perhaps I expected more of this book. The first story is indeed amazing, scary even, but the rest of them have disparities between each other. Some of them are curious, others are dull. In general, I feel a little disappointed.

Edogawa Rampo, father of the Japanese mystery story, took his pen name from a transliteration of Edgar Allan Poe. In many ways Rampo's stories resemble Poe's, with their playful claustrophobia and scientific sensory distortions. The best tales in this collection read like dissected horror: when wearing your skin feels uncomfortable in the sudden awareness of all the meat that you are. Recommended if you enjoy the psychological body horror of films like The Fly, or the grotesque manga of Junji Ito.

Stellar. There were a few stories that missed for me, but when they hit, they hit big. Creepy and compelling.
