Initial Impressions 12/26/18 and review as posted on The Book Addict's Guide 1/4/19: UNEARTHED was one of my favorite books from 2018 so naturally I was dying to read UNDYING! The way UNEARTHED ended was such a killer and I couldn't wait to see what happened next!

UNDYING was quite a solid progression in this series and had some great plot-building and overall concepts that continued building the series, but basically until this review was published, I didn't realize this was the last book and that there were only two. The whole book read like it was going to be the second book in a series and it felt like a good stepping stone. It had some incredibly interesting elements that I was guaranteed to love, and I did, but I almost wished those things that had been revealed as things that had already happened in the past had been a main part of the book, because they were things I love reading about. (That's a complicated sentence but without spoilers, it's a little difficult to word, but you get what I mean.)

I loved the space/other planet element of UNEARTHED and it was part of what made me love the book so much with the added bonus of mysterious alien elements and a treasure hunting feel. UNDYING had a much different feel for me, and it wasn't a bad thing but it didn't have that same special feel that UNEARTHED did. The more I think about it, the more noticeable it feels so that's kind of a bummer. I did still enjoy UNDYING and I liked where the series went, but it didn't feel as magical and as exciting. Mild spoiler (sorry) to say that we make it back to Earth somewhat quickly in the beginning of the book and so that space element is lost and it just wasn't as thrilling for me in that respect. The change of setting gave the book quite a different feel for me.

This is where my review gets extra complicated -- The whole time I was reading this book, I was sure it was the second book in a trilogy. It just sounded and felt like it was and didn't feel like it was leading towards the end. There was so much that was left to happen and I thought this was another one of those series (*cough* Renegades *cough*) that was advertised as two books but was getting stretched into three. That's how not-a-last-book this felt. So as I was reading, I had many "second book" feelings. I was expecting a cliffhanger at the end like the crazy way we were left in UNEARTHED and I was disappointed at the lack of cliffhanger (so I guess thank goodness there wasn't one). There kiiiind of was something that happened that was supposed to be shocking but I also kind of knew it wasn't going to stick? (Another complicated non-spoilery sentence but you'll know what I mean if you've read it.) Especially me thinking it was only the second book, I just didn't feel like it was something that would be permanent so I wasn't too worried about the shocking moment. If I had known better, I would have been a bit more panicked. I also really loved that the other cliffhanger from book one was a reveal about the plot and history and we didn't have that same sort of feel here. There were a lot of reveals within the book that were cool and surprising, but they were also surrounded by action so it didn't have time for it to sink in, at least for me.

I have to say, the blow that this was the last book in the series really affected my love for it. I suppose if I had realized that as I was reading, it would have changed much except for my knowledge while I was reading it, and it may have actually taken away more enjoyment from my reading experience because it really didn't feel like an ending at all. There was so much left to explore and there wasn't enough time in UNDYING to cover it, or rather, the book could have spent more time with the neat reveals instead of holding them for the end if this was how it was all going to conclude. The more I think about UNDYING, the less excited I feel, sadly. It's still quite a solid read and very enjoyable, but I just didn't get that level of excitement or engagement that I was hoping to achieve here.

This was so good! I knew it would be good when Amie and Meagan put an authors note in the front recapping the first book- how helpful is that! I love their characters and was definitely rooting for them. I didn’t know what to expect at any point of this book, with so many twists and turns.
Another great effort by two of my favourite authors!

The story may be the best thing I've ever read. So incredble. And the second half seems so oddly relatable to our current times. Everyone can learn something from Jules.

And the characters! They all came to life, leaping out of the page. I feel so connected to them even ones we barely saw I feel like I know. They will have a place in my heart for quite a while. Especially Jules, Mia, and Dex.

This author has something incredibly special for character driven stories and I'm going to find more by her right now.

The cherry on top of this is the ending. So wonderful, and emotional. I did cry a many times. But it left no question unanswered, tying everything up nicely. Exactly how I like it.

This sequel to Unearthed has Mia and Jules trapped in an Undying ship headed for Earth. It's supposed to be empty, but instead it's filled with the Undying who are supposed to be long extinct.

I loved Unearthed. Undying..less so. The first one, as best I can remember because it feels like ages since I read it, was full of action. Undying was mostly just a road trip to Prague. It was okay, but I didn't love it.

4.25*
My theory was right!! I rarely guess the crazy twists but I was super proud of myself for picking up on the clues Amie and Megan left behind in Unearthed.
Overall this book was an enjoyable read but it felt very different from the first book (Indiana Jones in space vs. typical save the world story) and I think that was why I couldn't give it a higher rating. I also found the thing in Lyon to be kind of eyeroll (it could have been something at least slightly original, it just felt like Illuminae all over again). Another thing I enjoyed about Unearthed was that it felt like the second half of the book had great twist after great twist. I never felt surprised by anything happening in this book, especially since I'd already guessed where the Undying at come from.

I still enjoyed watching Mia and Jules solve problems and question their motivations and each other. And I enjoyed the new characters we met and the little bit of info we received about the Undying. I'd love a prequel, or a sequel, book about them!

I loved this sequel. I thought the was such a unique science fiction read. I have never read story like this before. I also really did loved both main characters in the story. I really also liked the romance that developed more in this book. I also really liked the side characters that we got to meet in this read. I did think the ending was a bit rushed but overall a solid read!!

Undying picks up right after the events of Unearthed and is the final book in this duology. Mia and Jules are hiding on the Undying spaceship now that the Undying have come through the portals onboard and are headed to Earth to wipe out the “protos” (proto-humans). Mia and Jules are the only people who can save the planet, but nobody wants to listen to their warnings once they manage to stow away to Earth’s surface and try to let the governments know how much danger the planet faces. Mildly entertaining, but not as good as some other books this pair has written.

Oh wow! Wow, wow, WOW!!! Undying by Amie Kaufman, Meagan Spooner is the sequel and conclusion to Unearthed. It is not at all what I was expecting, but exactly what I didn’t know I needed. I was really torn on how I felt about [b:Unearthed|25446297|Unearthed (Unearthed, #1)|Amie Kaufman|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1495338043i/25446297._SX50_.jpg|45210048] when I finished it last year and didn’t know if I wanted to finish it, but when I came across a copy at the library, I couldn’t pass it up. I’m SO glad I grabbed it to read. Please note that if you haven’t read the first book of this series, there are spoilers to that book ahead. Read at your own risk. A little recap:
SpoilerUnearthed ended on a massive cliffhanger. Mia and Jules are stranded on the Undying ship they found on Gaia. The ship has just crossed the portal back to Earth and is now in orbit around their planet. As the book begins to end, portals aboard the ship start opening and Undying come pouring out. Now Mia and Jules have to find a way to warn Earth that the ship is a Trojan horse before it is too late.
Okay now you’re all caught up.

The scholar (Jules) and the scavenger (Mia) are in over their heads. On a ship orbiting Earth that is full of the Undying, neither of them knows how to accomplish what needs to be done. Add in the terror they feel at realizing the Undying somehow look human and you’ve got a high-suspense read. Jules is a little more sure of himself in this book than Mia is. Mia took the lead on Gaia. She knows how to scavenge and lie her way out of anything. Jules is the scholar, who can analyze and deduce what needs to be done. This book focuses more on his abilities than hers. They know they need to get warn Earth about what is on the ship. The question is how.

I like Jules and Mia together. I wasn’t really sold on their romance in the first book. It felt forced. However here it doesn’t. They rely on each other and trust the other with their life. It’s sweet and heartbreaking at the same time that these teens have been forced to become adult too soon. However they handle that stress well.

When they do get to Earth (with two aliens in tow), no one believes them and it is up to them to save the world. They begin a trek across Europe to Prague in search of Jules’s father who is perhaps the only person that will believe them. I liked the change of scenery, however I did miss Gaia. Having aliens on Earth though made up for it 😉 The plot moves like lightning, leaving me breathless at times and unable to read fast enough. I loved the mystery surrounding the Undying and the slow unraveling of the mystery.

Overall I really enjoyed Undying. It lived up to my expectations and exceeded them. I love the new characters that are introduced, like Dex and Atlanta. If you enjoyed [b:Unearthed|25446297|Unearthed (Unearthed, #1)|Amie Kaufman|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1495338043i/25446297._SX50_.jpg|45210048], I highly recommend this one.

I'm kind of tired of the trope filled disappointing not as thrilling sequels being released these days.

A satisfying conclusion to the Unearthed Duology. The story here picks up right where we left off in Unearthed and it is a fast paced race to the finish line. Mia and Jules are really great characters to read about but as much as I hated the romance in the first book, I loved it in this one. I don't know what happened or why. It seemed to really fit the story. Both Mia and Jules had some really emotional character arcs as well. Even though I did find the ending to be a little anti-climatic (and that is all I will say). We were introduced to a couple new characters and they each provided some good fuel for the story and plot. I don't want to say to much more because this is a sequel and a conclusion.

I really enjoyed this series and I think Amie and Meagan are a really great author duo and I am truly excited for what story they decide to give us next.
