I wish the last chapter had been in a different POV. But it was a great book, I totally cried.
I had so much fun with this duology. It was action packed, self-aware and intriguing, with a few surprising plot twists here and there that actually managed to catch me off guard, which I loved. The characters were fab, the romance was sweet and at no point did the plot lose my attention. I very much picked this duology up on a whim but I'm so glad I did.
Audiobook: 3.5/5* Whilst the narrators were great individually and told the story brilliantly, unfortunately when it came to character voices:accents, it became a little jarring, with each narrator seeming to decide on different voice styles for various characters.

I was hesitant to buy this book because I felt like the first book was slow, and I wasn't sure if I would like the sequel if it followed in the footsteps of the first novel. When I started to read this book, all of my worries were gone. This book is so much better than Unearthed because there is no set up! The first book did all of the set up so this book was all action and plot-driven! I thought that maybe I would unhaul the series, but reading this book made me change my mind and now I'm keeping it! Which is a big decision for me to make because I own so many books that deciding to keep a book after reading it is a big deal for me.
I really enjoyed the plot. I sped through this book. I would have finished it sooner if my life wasn't so busy, but even so I read it a lot faster then I initially thought I would be. It was so gripping right from the very start that I did not want to put the book down every time that I picked it up. I think it was the perfect length and the perfect story because it really keeps you on the edge of your seat until the last pages.
In terms of the characters, we got to see more of Mia and Jules. I think their relationship has changed a lot since the first book which was nice to see. I enjoyed seeing how dependent they are on each other. We also got introduced to three more main characters of Atlanta, Dex and Neal. I did enjoy getting to know them but I did feel like their character exploration was limited and very surface level because of how fast paced the story was. We barely got to know what drives them beyond big ideals.
Overall, I enjoyed this series. I'm saying that because I don't think there will be another book in the series but there is the potential for there to be sequels. I would recommend it because it's Lara Croft in space and it's such a cool crossover and I could read so many more books like it. I love Amie Kaufman and I am determined to read all her books too. I'm sad to see this series to end but I am excited to see what else the authors will write.

I don't have a whole lot to say about the sequel. I didn't like it *quite* as much as the first book (I miss the puzzles and temple raiding!), but it was a fun and fast-paced sci-fi. I'm going to be honest, though, even after just finishing it I can't tell you much about what actually happened for the entire book. Lots of things happened, but I don't feel like there was much of a plot going on besides "save humanity from the Undying." Mostly it was just running, and escaping; followed by some more running and escaping (seriously, the adults in this book are incompetent, wtf).
Not to say that I didn't enjoy it, because I still did! The narration was fantastic once again. Steve West and Alex McKenna brought the characters to life, and the accents were spot on! I also enjoyed the addition of Dex's POV there at the end, with his own narrator. The Undying's language was pretty cool
Spoiler
(it would make sense that they'd have different slang after being separated from regular humanity for 300 years)The explanation of the Undying was interesting, but maybe a bit convoluted and hard to grasp.
Spoiler
Okay, so it's the humans from the Centauri mission. That was cool. They had an accidental time shift, causing them to literally get lost in space and time (so it was time travel, CALLED IT *shimmy*). Also cool. But even after 300 years, how has their vision of their predecessors become so distorted to the point that they think they are subhuman and not worthy of living?! That part didn't make sense to me. The Undying viewed "protos" (regular humans) as basically Neanderthals. Bruh, it's been 3 centuries, not 3 millennia. You're not THAT far advanced, geesh. I found the timeline to be confusing too (regarding how they went way back in time to build the "alien" temple).Spoiler
Jules got SHOT and was legit bleeding TF out and I didn't bat an eyelash. I knew he wouldn't die, so the overly dramatic "death" scene had me rolling my eyes. Dude it's Kaufman, not Kristoff, everyone is totally safe lmaoooo. This review was originally posted on Novel Heartbeat. To see a breakdown of my assessment, please visit the full review here.
The front of this book says it's an "epic conclusion" to the sci-fi duology. Epic? Not the word I would use to describe it?
Overall, the story was okay. Fine.
But that was about it. I didn't engage with the book, in the same way I didn't engage with Unearthed. I didn't feel any feelings for the characters. The plot felt like a fairly generic, end-of-the-world, save=the-earth remix. And while the first book had the added elements of Indiana-Jones inspired temple runs and puzzles, the plot of this story had... aliens? But also barely any aliens for an alien book?
The romance was bleh. If anything, I loved the f/f german couple that randomly make an appearance in the middle more than any of the main characters. The ending as well was... just okay.
And that is about it. The book was okay. I don't know why, but as much as I love Kaufman everytime she teams up with Spooner I feel underwhelmed.

I loved this. I was lucky enough to get an advanced readers copy of unearthed all those years ago and fell in love with this story and these characters, but I couldn't bring myself to read the sequel until now and I honestly don't know why I waited so long.
Amie Kaufman and Megan Spooner are two of my favourite authors and they have done it again in this incredible finale.
You did not need to do us dirty in that last chapter my little heart couldn't take it
If you like Sci/fi and an adventure like no other, you need to read this.

I enjoyed this a lot more than Unearthed, which seems to be a rarity from the other reviews I've read.
Unearthed was good, don't get me wrong. But as much as I enjoyed it I also got a little bored at times. I think I was expecting/hoping for was more archeology, less video game puzzle solving.
Undying was a surprising change. A steadier pace.... Less Action Action Action all the time, which I prefer. I had guessed some of the ending, but there was a lot I hadn't expected too.
In conclusion, while Kaufman and Spooner's newest collaboration wasn't nearly as good as their first (imo), it was still fun and exciting and I'll keep an eye out for them working together again.
