My gosh. I have been in the process of ‘reading’ this since the end of January, I hate going into the new year with books unfinished so I planned to finally finish this. I know he’s basically the Godfather of person-centred therapy and is very interesting and smart but this is was a difficult read! It’s obviously very old and there are outdated concepts and language that did kind of seem irrelevant…I admit, I have skipped some bits. I did find it more interesting however once I’d started actually working with clients and there are definitely some takeaways and a lot of notes in the margin - however, I’m glad to see the back of it

This felt a bit like two separate books to me--the first half about the elements of therapists, clients, and psychotherapy that foster personal growth, and the second about research, the bx sciences, etc. I enjoyed and learned from the first half immensely.

certainly a total—must-read for psychology undergraduates and strange humans that feels like taking a peek into the psychotherapy process inside the Person Centered Therapy's big boss lens. also a nice way of understanding the importance of accepting others as they are instead of adopting a judgmental position based on our own moral principles. not to mention the genius thoughts about the responsibilities linked with the therapists role as a professional which guides the development of another life besides its own. Indeed marvelous, but beware that by a lot of times some chapters may usually get very academically inclined when C. Rs decides to show some research findings that are probably more interesting to him — that at the time indeed needed to defend his theory — than for the common reader.

I wanted to like this more than I did. His core insights were revolutionary and are enduringly influential. But this book often fluffs up those simple insights at exhaustive and exhausting length with academic-ese and psychobabble. The book ends up feeling much longer than it needs to be.
This book also hasn't aged well. It seems to define the individual's psychological state as an almost entirely internal matter, never addressing with any care the effects of trauma or social factors, such as racism, poverty, sexism, etc.
