This was a good read. It dragged a little here and there, but was overall great!
An excellent second book, kept the intrigue of the first but didn't feel like a clone. The romance is sloooooooow burn so if you're coming here for that, you're gonna have to wait for it. That cliffhanger...! I gasped when the audiobook narrator started reading the credits.

See Her Die is the second book in the Bree Taggart series. Bree is a former Philadelphia police detective whose life changed dramatically when her sister was murdered. Bree returns to their rural New York state hometown to become the guardian of her sister's two children and solve her sister's murder. This second book picks up a couple of months after the first book (Cross Her Heart) which I devoured in audio early last year.
Bree has been in the role of Sheriff for only a couple of weeks but despite surviving her tragic past, it continues to haunt her. When there's a shooting at a local campground that is closed for the winter and the bodies start piling up, Bree calls in Matt Flynn and his K9 partner Brody to help her team solve the case.
There are a couple of storylines that are woven together, and I loved getting the POV of the sadistic murderer which added to the tension - as did the rage-fueled (and gruesome) murders.
Bree is the kind of main character I love. She's strong in her professional role but still adjusting to her new family situation and is awkward when it comes to her love life - which is handled with a very, very light hand. And dog lovers will enjoy this series - particularly Matt and his family's close bond with their canines - especially when it comes to hunting down bad guys.
This series has a nice blend of white-knuckle moments, important topics (grief, PTSD ...), a tense manhunt and character growth as readers witness Bree's professional and personal struggles in her new role as Sheriff and parent.

Thoroughly enjoyed this thriller and even though I haven't read the first in the series, this story stands on its own. Bree is the new sheriff in town, taking over from a former sheriff who was as popular as he was corrupt. As we quickly learn, Bree's sister was murdered in the first novel and now Bree has become a mother to her niece and nephew. With a new job and new role as a mother, Bree struggles to find work/life balance. And now a homeless teen claims to have seen her friend shot.
When dealing with the investigation (and as the dead count increases), the pace is a page-turner, compelling me to rush through the chapters to see what's next. The character introductions are weaved throughout the story, giving the reader just enough background to understand who is who and how the players all fit together. The description of the cold wintery days made me shiver and the backdrop of the shuttered campground gave a nice creepy atmosphere. I hate to use the word "twist," but the ending provided a satisfying closing with a twist.
The story's POV is told from Bree and Matt's voice. But about halfway through the book, all a sudden the reader is given a 3rd POV from the killer. That really took me out of the story. For me, having the killer's motive revealed in the middle of the novel was disappointing. I felt it would have had more impact if we hadn't heard from the killer, at all.
The romance between Bree and Matt was another issue I had with the story. It felt like an afterthought. I ended up just skipping whenever those scenes came up. But that's me.
Overall, I found the story, the writing, and the characters compelling and engaging. I've already purchased the first in the series and look forward to reading more from Ms. Leigh.
