Holy shit this book is absolutely beyond beautiful
I listened to it and read it at the same time which made the experience so much more amazing and I’m so glad I did it that way
I feel like I’ll be thinking about this book for the foreseeable future cause holy shit
And it’s so so clear that the narrator for the audiobook is ver familiar with the culture and the story and everything so it makes a lot of sense that it seems to be Elizabeth Acavedo narrating it which adds so much - just amazing overall

As always, this is one of my favorite books. Elizabeth Acevedo is an amazing poet and reader, and this audiobook is literally fantastic.

part I was terrifyingly relatable. it highly takes emphasis on traditional and religious beliefs of a certain person (Xiomara's mom) and how they try to compel their child into something they (Xiomara) disfavor, until there comes the day more and more questions starts to form and pile up until these collective thoughts turned into merely antipathy for their conflicting faith and beliefs, but what can a child do over their own parent's abusive behaviour when every.single.thing. should be under their control as long as you live under the same roof?

part II was a bit dreary probably because of the romance
(I also didn't like how they still ended up together. X and Aman's relationship...that I won't acknowledge. seeing your partner get sexually violated in public and choosing to ignore? yeaaa enough for me. please.)

part III is when I shed tears, particularly because of the passage written below. but the rest were a bit of a letdown honestly, wrapped up way too quickly.
there was an attempt to reconstruct her mother's attitude squeezed into the last five pages.

excerpt from part III, Going Home:
<i>"Going Home. Is one of the hardest things I've ever done. Hands trembling at the thought of what will happen when I walk through the front door. Because my mother's ears are soundproof when it comes to me."</i>

"The Poet X" by Elizabeth Acevedo is the story of Xiomara Batista, a teenage girl living in Harlem who keeps a journal of her life in the form of poems. Throughout the novel she discovers her love of slam poetry and uses art to find her voice.

This book was powerful and vulnerable all at once. Xiomara's struggle to find her own identity while others in her life push their narratives on to her is both familiar and authentic. Her struggles with being a first generation American, a girl, Dominican and having a very religious family are all met with her relentless passion for writing, it gave me chills. Acevedo's writing cuts out all the unnecessary chatter and takes you to the heart of each character instantly. This was a story about love, forgiveness, voice and poetry, it took me about 3 hours to read, and I could not put it down.

An incredible read. I don’t typically love poetry style writing, but this was easy to read even for non-poets, and the story was amazing. It’s a relatively quick read, highly recommend.
