Settling on 4 stars. For the content and weight of materials, it's easily 5 stars. But I struggled with some of the writing (many parts became repetitive, with the same pieces of a story repeated sometimes twice in two pages) so minus one star there.
This book is a great follow-up to Good and Mad. That one got me riled up and this one a) made me more mad about international events I was ignorant about and b) gives some tangible ideas about how to fuck the patriarchy. As a parent to a young daughter, I also try to keep from perpetuating myths about female inferiority so I really appreciated the chapters about anger and power - there are good reminders in there about how society talks to and treats girls in the hopes of keeping them in line and how to work at breaking those bounds.

Hi if you’re a woman who’s angry and tired right now you should read this book.
This book was more aggressive than most that I read, but Mona Eltahawy’s anger is well placed. I am grateful for her willingness to freely share from her experience, research, and beliefs in this book, as well as the multitude of references for further reading. This book was well done and is well worth the read.
Very timely and so aligned to how I feel in this 2020 shitstorm with constant disappointment and continuation of racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia and intersections of any combination. I’m ready for a revolution.

« the most subversive thing a woman can do is to talk about her life as if it really matters, because it does. »
Mona Eltahawy strikes again with an unapologetic feminist manifesto, declaring the seven “sins” she deems necessary to commit by girls and women to defeat the patriarchy and any form of bigotry.
Those sins -admirable traits when committed by men- are anger, attention, profanity, ambition, power, violence and lust.
Eltahawy once again, writes from the heart and from personal experience; she tells the stories of women from different backgrounds who committed these sins to defeat and fight the patriarchy, xenophobia, homophobia, and all types of bigotry. The hate they were subjected to, the assault and in some cases the imprisonment they faced because they chose to fight.
Heart wrenching, realistic, brutal and unapologetic. Mona’s ideas, books and essays might be my favorite manifestos to read !
