This book started out slow and than started picking up and started getting good. If this wasn’t “Batman” I think this book would have been better. I guess I just expected more from Batman than just a young man who can be so easily manipulated by a criminal.

Dear Marie Lu, if you continued writing Batman books I would devoutly follow you.

Quick Answers:
-No, you don't need to have read Wonder Woman: Warbringer to read this. Think of the DC Icons as a shared universe/set, instead of a series. For example, Luther Co. is mentioned in Batman but that's it. So, chances are, Catwoman and Superman won't be related either (though those release after the fall of 2018).
-No you don't need to be a Batman fan to appreciate this. Marie Lu does a fantastic job of laying everything out, sprinkling the story with Gotham City bits and pieces (including characters, WayneTech, etc.) (Although, if you do, there are somethings to appreciate there as well!)
-Yes, Bruce serves community service at Arkham Asylum. No, it's not as freeform as you might think. It gets explained and, to me, actually works (even if we wouldn't put a teen working in an Asylum, Gotham city definitely would).
-Yes, this book is under 300 pages. While I want more from Marie Lu for Bruce Wayne in the future, if this book was longer I think it would have been draggy- so I appreciate her call on that.
-Oh, and I have no idea about Teen Titans or Nightwing being in the works, but I can say that Bruce has just turned 18 when the book starts...so there's no sign of Dick or Damien in this book. Sorry.
1 star - Marie Lu captures the Bruce Wayne sound/feel/humor wonderfully. I have no idea if she's a fan, or just really well researched, but I felt connected to Bruce from page 1.
2 stars - The pacing was fantastic. I was never bored, and there were just as many upbeat moments as slower ones. And the action scenes kept me page-turning!
3 stars - I cared about the side characters! Even Alfred (the guardian in this) was present and awesome. This really helped shape the book for me.
4 stars - The look and feel of Gotham, and how present it is for Bruce, was very well done. Again, you don't need to have read the comics or watched any tv/movies to enjoy it.
5 stars - I loved the mystery & psychological bits! I found myself just as confused and curious as Bruce, which kept me hooked and intrigued.

It would be a better book if it was a standalone story and not supposed to be Batman. Maybe it's my bias of what I imagine Batman to be, but there was too much of a difference from who Bruce Wayne usually is to the kid in this story. And the dialogue was very repetitive which irked me
I liked this book and if there were 1/2 stars it would be 3 1/2 but I feel it fell short and not as good as Wonder Woman: Warbringer, which I really liked. I feel like we didn’t really learn anything new or interesting about Batman, not did it feel like it was a book by Marie Lu who always gives us such interesting characters.

"Bruce could not have said whether the figure was meant to symbolise justice or death. Maybe this was one and the same." 🦇
The Batman story as a book and with some changes. Basic things are the same (names, the mansion, the setting and the principle of fighting injustice and inequality). Still, it's not the Batman story you know from the movies. The story takes place in Bruce's teenage years, before his big appearance as Batman. So it makes sense that there are differences between the film. Bruce Wayne does become an indirect hero for Gotham City, but bats don't play a role yet ;)
The relationship with Madeleine, the high-ranking woman of the Nightwalker group, is very much at the center. Although I really like many facets, there was a lack of depth and I could almost understand the emotions of secondary characters better than Bruce. Especially the complicated relationship with Madeleine develops in my opinion too suddenly and towards the end too fast. The core themes and the plot itself are great and the author is great at describing fight scenes and generally depicting the locations well. Still, for me it's rather an average read that doesn't deserve any special recognition. Maybe I would like it better as a comic, which is supposed to be very well done.
