I’m not really sure what the point of this book was honestly. Usually books set in and about the times of slavery are really heart wrenching and get me 100% in the feels. This book just seemed pointless to me. It was basically about a muloto(sp) slave girl who has a crappy life and talks to her dead ancestors. The whole thing just seemed to flow from one event to the next without any real plot. Major things happened and somehow I completely missed the start of the events. One minute one thing was happening and the next something completely different was going on and the transition seemed completely nonexistent to me, leaving me completely confused. Jesmyn Ward does put words together well so that’s what saved it from being a one star but ultimately, I just didn’t care about a single person or event in this book

This was a beautifully written story. The author effectively captures the reader's attention from the first sentence. I appreciated the strong connection between the mother and daughter, particularly the mother's lesson that, despite physical enslavement, one need not be enslaved mentally and should always strive to resist. However, despite being engaged initially, there were moments throughout the book where my attention wavered. Overall, this was a lovely narrative with a satisfying conclusion.
