I loved the first half, with it sad story that spoke of the desolation of slavery. I truly thought this was going to end up being a five-star rating until the book turned into some weird mythical poetry that seemed like an ongoing hallucination through to the end of the book, and a lot of the story was lost for me at that point.

Annis is the daughter of her sire and her mother, a house slave. Overhearing the tutor teach her white sisters about Dante’s Inferno helps give meaning to her own journey to adulthood.

Ward's just a brilliant writer, and Let Us Descend is more evidence to that. The writing in this book is incredibly beautiful. Some of the lines hit you with their beauty. It's not an easy read, and the story is heartbreaking and unflinching in its portrayal of slavery. It's one of my favorite books so far this year, and I cannot wait for others to read it.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of this book.
