Reading this after Matthew Perry has passed is very eerie.

I’m not a Friends Fangirl. But I did enjoy this memoir.

I found myself having second hand embarrassment so often. His self depreciation sense of humor is funny, ironic and sad. He’s so self aware of his issues thanks to all of his stints in rehab and therapy. It makes for a very blatantly honest memoir.

Ok vibes for this book: troubled waters, but hope on the horizon.

He always talks about the view. He loves a good view. And this both makes me smile and feel like he and I would get along (cuz so do I) but also makes me sad because the last photo I saw of him was after his death as we saw him in his pool looking out at the view.

The book jumps around a lot, but I think that was intentional… can’t say that for sure because I did audiobook, but the interludes were continual but disjointed from each chapter, so… connected but jumpy.

And the ending made me sad because it’s hopeful and we know what happened after it was published. But overall, I found it hopeful and I think it helped to point out to those that don’t understand addictions that there’s different brain chemistry. They can’t do anything about it. But hopefully one day we will learn something that can help better than what we have now.

RIP Matthew. You deserve to have some peace. 🕊️

First off, I’m not a “Friends” fan. It doesn’t represent my generation and I don’t find it funny or interesting. However, I have seen the author interviewed on Dave Letterman’s show and found him funny and quick witted. Tragically, the book was published right before Perry’s death. Do we blame addicts for their demises? Does the fact that Perry was rich and famous make us less sympathetic to his plight? Is it fair to blame his parents? I’m guessing Perry would have traded his fame and wealth for a wife and children, but ultimately he came to that realization too late. Overall this is a depressing read of a mostly wasted (pun intended) life.
