Thank you, Matty, for writing this memoir. Thank you for telling your story, I wanted to read this story as soon as the news broke out (I waited months, 12 months to be exact). I love his authenticity and the dark humor it has (I always loved dark humor).

I have watched Friends 6 times or more already (Yes, all of the episodes, including the reunion), and I loved Chandler Bing the most, the Chan Chan man who is awkward and jokes when uncomfortable. I liked that Chandler was a bit based on Matthew IRL; it gave me an idea of who he was. I just loved that he was perfect for the role. Friends wouldn't be the same without your sweater vests in it. Haha! Peace!

I have to be honest; this story was hard to read because of the big terrible thing. It made me sad that a person went through hell so much. It must be so painful.

I'm glad he was still alive because Matty is brilliant (See some of the Friends' jokes by him for proof). He needs to write more stuff because he is super funny; his jokes need an audience.

P. S.
Fame is something, huh? It costs a lot more than we realized. And wow, Matty's voice on the audiobook helped so much with the texts.

Big Terrible Thing indeed. Addiction is a horrible disease and I never would have guessed Matthew Perry had it so bad. I guess it’s somewhat obvious in hind sight, though. I can absolutely picture the weight fluctuation he attributes to the different substances he abused while shooting Friends over the years (I was/am a diehard fan. I still cry every time I watch the episode where Monica proposes to Chandler. Every. Time.) It’s honestly amazing that he’s still alive, and I applaud the bravery it must have taken to put his battle with addiction out there for the masses in such a raw and honest way. That being said, I found the book repetitive and occasionally hard to follow, as the timeline jumps around a lot without any warning. Also, I’m not gonna lie, he comes off as a bit of a jerk at times, especially with that unwarranted Keanu Reeves comment. Jerk-ish comment or not, I wouldn’t wish Matthew’s struggle on anyone. I’m glad he survived himself and seems to be in a better place now.

A really honest portrayal of addiction

This is not your average light celebrity memoir as Matthew Perry mainly focuses on his struggles with addiction throughout the duration of the book. I will say the pacing and chronology were off which made following the storyline more difficult. At times the chapters were very long. The book bounces around with time points and time frames which can be quite confusing. I will say he doesn’t seem to hold back details and often shows some self awareness amongst moments of reflection. I would recommend this book but only if the reader can handle such detailed focus on addiction, drug use, and alcoholism.

I didn't exactly "enjoy" this book. It's narrated by the author and his sense of humor comes through, but ultimately, his brutal honesty about his decades of struggling with addiction make for the tragic story of a celebrity who is lucky to have survived to this age. Although he talks about how he became interested in acting, his early roles, his rise to fame, more major roles, and getting into movies, there are few behind-the-scenes anecdotes. The focus is mostly on how his battle with addiction affected his performance or success and why, despite knowing the path, he would repeatedly relapse after going through rehab and even being sober for months or years. He also goes into how this affected his personal relationships with women he dated, naming only a few of them. Throughout the book, he remained respectful and grateful to family, friends, and costars who supported him throughout his struggles. He also talks a lot about the psychology of addiction and things that happened in his childhood that played a part in the problem. He seems to be in a better frame of mind now, to have learned a lot and is helping others, but realizes that recovery will continue the rest of his life.
