Přátelé, lásky a ten ohromný průšvih by Matthew Perry

dark reflective sad medium-paced

The irony and tragedy this drips with in the context of reading this after his death - a death by drug overdose, but not the drugs he ever thought - really colours the whole read. Of course he’s flawed and delusional and selfish: he was an addict, all his life and up to the writing of this book. He writes like it’s all behind him now and it’s all retrospective and he’s a changed  man but we know he was still an addict at that time because he was an addict to his death. The book tells you what it’s going to be. Don’t read the memoir of an addict if you don’t want to read the thoughts of an addict. I enjoyed it though; tragic, powerful, and very very sad.

It is heartbreaking of what addiction does to a person.

A solid memoir detailing Perry’s life- from a rocky childhood, to his rise to fame, to time on set of Friends, to his struggles with addiction. I really enjoyed the audio, as Perry was the narrator, and many of the stories needed his classic cadence & comedic timing to get the full effect!

Perry gives a very real, very graphic account of his decades-long battle with addiction, sparing few details. Although scenes from rehabs and hospitals are cushioned by witty, Chandler Bing-esque remarks, readers seeking sweet, wholesome memories and behind-the-scenes stories from the Friends set should not expect to find them in this book. Addiction is a terrible disease.

slow-paced

A little repetitive and cliché, but some dry humor and funny moments/lines and interesting insights about life with addiction.
