loved the last few chapters but overall quite long. tower of dawn and empire of storms could most definitely have been one book.

the coupling seems excessive at this point and I think we could have benefitted from even one LGBTQ couple out of the 10000 straight ones just to switch things up.

Favorite book of series so far. Writing much improved. Don’t think I cringed once. Entertaining. Great adventure. Devoured it. Refreshing getting different perspectives and setting.

Als Chaol of Yrene t niet overleven zal ik nooit meer een SJM boek lezen

How did I not add some kind of review yet?

I loved how Tower of Dawn took me to Chaol and Nesryn. I completely lost myself in this story, hurting for them, rooting for them, even tearing up at times because.. I just couldn't help myself? I applaud C & N getting their own book though. These were two characters I desperately wanted more of - especially Chaol, doh - because they kept disappearing to the background. I would've been bummed out if they simply made a reappearance and "HEY. ALL IS FIXED WITH CHAOL." Like, no. Tower of Dawn was much needed and I loved it and.. LALALA. *all the gushing*

Have to say though, I was seriously missing all our other characters anyway. I can't WAIT to see how Maas will end this series. I don't even want it to end? But at the same time I do because.. HELLO, every wait is TORTURE and authors torture us plenty already. [Sorry, but it's true.]

You bet your asses I'll be reading Kingdom of Ash as soon as I can though.
No doubt about it. I need it. Now.
[Please, please, don't kill any of my favorite characters..]

As I headed into this reread, I really wasn't looking forward to it because, to be honest, Tower of Dawn was my least favorite book in the entire series. This time around, somehow, the book had me enthralled. I adore Nesryn and Sartaq, but even more so, I absolutely fell in love with Yrene Towers - I couldn't even moderately fault Chaol for falling in love with her. The journey these two went on together was my favorite part of the entire book, I found the way they fell for each other almost to be in the same manner as a teenager would experience puppy love for the first time and then we watched it turn into something far deeper than that.

Chaol had about as much character as a brickwall to me before this book, I respect the character a whole lot more now.

What do I even make of this book 😩

The entirety of Part 1 was a drag and did not need to be as long as it was. This whole book should’ve been 300-350 pages max and could almost be considered a novella. Also the pacing was so bizarre; so much time was taken up establishing this new location and set of characters that any progression with events felt sudden and rushed.

Part 2 was more entertaining but still not super necessary to plot progression which, being the second to last book in the series, made every page feel like “please can we just get back into the story already”. The little sprinklings of information we got were definitely awesome, but most of the second half was just random fun stuff 😅
Note: there’s nothing wrong with side quests or taking time to let readers connect with characters, however if you just suddenly decide to make that choice this late in a series then it’s just incredibly disengaging and ruins the series’ pacing.

Also, SJM hates masculinity and I cannot be proven wrong 😒 She makes all of her male characters jacked with muscle but God forbid they do ANYTHING manly or protect anyone or stand for any values because all of SJM’s copy-paste female characters will flame them for it. It’s just exhausting. Let a man be a man, especially when most of SJM’s female characters have the collective IQ of 8 but infinite plot armor.

Can I be honest? I haven't liked Chaol for most of this series 😅 But this book really did give me further understanding of him. I loved getting to explore the new continent, seeing storylines tie together, being reintroduced to a character previously mentioned and being given further background. I'm excited to read the final book of the series and see how everything plays out.
