It tortured me. It caused me such pain I got a taste for it. I gave it 3 stars initially. Now it's been 2 years since I read it, and the book haunts me. I am giving it 4 stars today. The pain is lingering.
A neat experimental idea and concept that really does memic real life satiracly. However as an audiobook I was ready for it to be over. Very different from his later works
535 pages of confusion and enigmatic fate. The Unconsoled offered nothing of a story, rather a nightmare that keeps going on and on. A complete nightmare that is comparable to Kafka's works, where the main character named Ryder is dragged helplessly to and fro.
This may be one of the finest books I’ve read. I took forever to read it as it is entirely consuming in a way I have not experienced before. It’s about family and memory and the sacrifices we make for “success,” as well as the sacrifices we demand of each other. Definitely read if you’re in the mood to be absolutely devastated by one of the best authors writing right now.
3.5/5 maybe? Not my favorite of his, but points for form and prose (as always). I have now *officially* read all of Ishiguro’s novels....until his new one comes out in March.
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY surreal, but not in a fun way. In a what-the-hell-is-going-on-and-why-is-all-this-happening-now-I-have-a-headache kind of way. I normally very much enjoy this author, but this is very different than his other works. Maybe my expectations were off, mostly I just didn't get it and didn't have fun trying to figure it out.

My best thought after reading this is...WTF? Wow - what an incredibly odd book. Ishiguro's brilliance is always apparent, and the storyline is just too damned weird for me. He is surely one of our finest authors, I will continue to read him every chance I get, and this book was no one that I wish to repeat.
Frustrating and thoroughly unpleasant book. Kafkaesque fever dream of the sort you'd expect the night before a big exam, where everything and everyone is out of your control and you just can't get a grip on anything. Brilliant process.
