exceedingly mid.
should have ended differently, i feel like tom sawyer messing stuff up was just lame and jim being freed without Hucks help undermined all Hucks character growth.

This book is MUCH better experienced in audio format than in written, imo, but it was nice having both so I could see how the accents were notated. I like Huck as a character (whereas I want to bring bodily harm to Tom Sawyer), think the novel is very funny, and appreciate the satire. The pacing and plot arc felt a little… off, but maybe that’s because I thought the book was going to do MUCH more with Huck & Jim’s relationship and Huck’s awareness of slavery/racism (as that’s discussed in analyses so often), but it’s not actually the central focus of much of the plot, especially in the back half, and while Huck learns to be less of a jackass, the book never moves to transcend and Do A Thing, instead hanging back in the satirical/critical… which is fine, but kind of unsatisfying. *post-run-on sentence deep breath* I fear this book is going to become less readable as media literacy continues to die off & readers struggle increasingly with the concept of characters behaving in ways the author finds morally reprehensible (on purpose). I’m really looking forward to reading James now!

Okay. I did it. I read it. And my ears twitched hard every time the N word appeared. That is a lot of twitching. And also, I am just not a "boy on an adventure" kind of girl.

The plot and adventure within are better than that of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. It remains a classic. However, re-reading this as an adult was slightly difficult with the wording from the time period and class of characters.
