I’ve been meaning to read through this entire collection of poetry for years and just recently made it happen. Some wonderful selections here and I always love Jon J. Muth’s artwork. It’s a lovely addition to the included poems.

Not as captivating as I had hoped. But I did read many of the poems to my kids.

This wonderful book had great illustrations and amusing poems for the days and seasons for children. children would have a lot of fun with this book and they will learn multiple poets in this book as well. the bright pages keep the children involved and awake while reading! I would recommend this book for elementary ages 8 and up.

A lot of people have raved about this collection of poetry so I may be the lone voice who doesn't totally agree. Don't get me wrong. I really don't have anything against the poems. Many of the poems in this collection are familiar to me and many of them are fabulous. I especially liked "Voices Rising". The illustrations are beautiful as well. So what is the problem? I just don't find it very kid friendly. I have a copy. I will put it in my library. But who will check it out? Poetry doesn't get checked out by students much. Occasionally Shel Silverstein and Jack Prelutsky will get checked out but unless it's April (Poetry Month) and they are required to my poetry books don't circulate. Teachers check poetry books out more. I love poetry, I really do but in order to get kids really interested it needs to be unique and different. I just don't think the book will have a lot of kid appeal.

As I read the poems in this book I thought what wonderful words people have written and that was enough for me to believe that even if these are not learned by heart, they should be read to kids. Some poems are for younger kids and some for older kids so there has to be some discretion among what will be read and shared. That said, the collection has poems that are old and it has newer poems. Poems that are short and poems that are long. It has funny, serious, sad, silly and every kind of emotion/reaction you can think of represented. I also liked that there were a variety of cultures and times represented. The way that the book is laid out is in chapters that correlate with themes kids can relate to: poems about self, poems about family, poems about friendship and love, poems about creatures, nonsensical poems, poems about school, poems about games and sports, poems about war, poems about nature. This arrangement is well done and obviously purposeful.
In the beginning this books examines why it is important to learn poetry. I wish I would have had my own children memorize poems from this book.

A pretty good but, of course, not perfect, selection of poems to read & learn.

Meh. I don't know- just not the sort of poems I would like to learn by heart. Neat concept, though.

Although, I'm not familiar with majority of the poetry, I still enjoyed reading them and I was totally in love with the art!

I'm not ready to rate these yet, because I think these are poems for kids who are older than mine.
