This is the latest book in the Chronicles of Nick. If you want something that is absolutely hilarious, sarcastic, heartfelt, and dynamic this is the book for you. Kenyon's writing is so on point, she will have you laughing one minute and crying the next. It's just such an incredibly interesting world that she has built here.
In this book we find ourselves following Nick and the gang on yet another crazy adventure (thankfully a non-zombie one this time). This one is a little different though. Nicks powers are being drained and his friends are disappearing left and right. ***mild spoiler alert*** We also get to meet Caleb and Xev's father!! There are some deep rifts in that family tree and they are starting to mend just the smallest bit. It was also a treat to see Xev get his hair fixed! It's not that god-awful mishmash of color anymore. ***end spoiler alert***
The gang keeps growing, they find more strays to take in then any other set of characters. It's sweet, and I just want to hug them all. I think that this group of people fits very nicely into the cinnamon roll meme, most look like they could kill you but are total cinnamon rolls and those that look like cinnamon rolls could kill you. They are just such a great ensemble cast, and made this book a joy to read. I give it a solid four and a half stars!

This is less a review, and more a rambling mess of my thoughts immediately after finishing this one, ugh.

What even is this book? I had to check to make sure I hadn't missed a book somehow, because this one had a lot that just didn't make sense, and wasn't really explained at any point. It's just presented to us (so much info-dumping in this one), and that's that. I feel like I need a detailed family tree and character guide at this point, which is kind of ridiculous since this is the penultimate book in this series. By this point, I feel like I should know who everyone is and how they're connected (or at least most of them), but new connections keep being tossed in with no real explanation. Or maybe I'm just an idiot and not keeping up with the multiple names for the same characters or something, I don't know.

I'm also kind of tired of Nekoda at this point. The only real purpose she seems to have is being Nick's girlfriend, and I just don't care about her like I think I should after 7 books. I honestly forget she even exists sometimes, until she pops up in a scene. She's not the only character I forget about, but it is the most frustrating because I want her to have more of a personality and have more of a purpose in the story than being Nick's love interest.
Also, while I'm fine with Cherise being an anchor for Nick to the side of the good guys and all that, it actually makes sense for her to have that role because she's his mother and he loves her more than anything else. Giving Nekoda the same role, basically, just isn't as interesting for me. Then there's Nick's tendency to get all caveman and territorial, when Nekoda is supposed to be a major badass and capable of taking care of herself. It isn't amusing anymore.

This one just wasn't that great. I feel like almost nothing happened throughout the entire book, until the epilogue.
Who else is pretty sure the new kid, Nathan (or whatever his name is), is Nick's future son?
That was actually pretty interesting, because it calls into question sooo much that's happened in all the other books
like how many visits from Ambrose were actually Ambrose, and not his son
, and it's the only reason I actually will read the last book. If it hadn't been for the epilogue, I would have stopped with this book, even though there's only one left, because I just didn't care anymore. The epilogue saved it from being a 2-star book, though.
