This was the most jam-packed book I have EVER read. This book felt like it had 3 books put into one. There were so many things happening, so many plot points. Surprisingly, everything fit seamlessly together and the book did not feel crowded. All of the plot points came together and the book did not feel rushed or slow at all. I was interested the entire time.

I thought all the plot points (and there were SO MANY!!) were really interesting and each one gave a new kind of challenge to Xingyun; they were all very unique but they all seemed to flow together really well.

Also, the romances formed naturally and as organically as possible, and even though it is one single book that explored two romances in-depth, it was not insta-love AT ALL. How did Sue Lynn Tan make this book?? I seriously enjoyed the romances in this book, which is definitely not common for me.

Xingyun was such a great main character, she really is a flawed person, but a good person, and I was rooting for her so hard. She was very compassionate and kind and loyal to those around her. I do wish we could have gotten a LITTLE BIT of more background on her and her friendship with Shiuxao, because I love their friendship but I felt like it was brushed over a little bit in Shiuxao’s introduction to the story.

I thought the prose was absolutely amazing, and I loved the lore and history of this fantasy world. Recently I’ve been feeling let down by fantasy worlds, it just seems like they are all the same, but this one is so vast and so unique, I loved it! I know it is inspired by Chinese mythology, and I strongly enjoyed this author’s take on that mythology. I’m very excited to read the next book!

Everything works out too nicely. I felt like I was reading a children's book.

Read well and was interesting from cover to cover. The plot was resolved at the end of the book with no cliff hangers so I’m curious to see what book 2 will be about.
