Tillie Walden has such a knack for emotional, atmospheric works where I always feel like I'm missing something - and like that's exactly how things are supposed to be. Also, as always, the artwork is stunning.

i'll be forever in love with tillie walden's artwork! her art is so good! so pretty and the colours!!!!! sadly, the story itself wasn't one of my favourites mainly because of how fake the dialog felt and i would have said that it got better over time but i just noticed that this graphic novel was posted in 2019 while On a Sunbeam was published back in 2018. I'd say that "Are you listening?" is not even close(!!) to how excellent On a Sunbeam is! but! the book overall deserves more love and i simply cannot give it 3*.

This graphic novel was extremely moving, mixing discovery about one’s sexuality, grief and trauma recovery from sexual assault, it captures really well the magic behind new hopes but also the gloominess of sadness.
In this story, a cat is the companion of new directions, helping two girls follow their own paths and escaping their past.

I really loved the symbolism of the story but, as always with graphic novels, I found it to evasive, especially on the cat’s magic abilities.
Nonetheless, I think it was very necessary for the story to keep this element a little more abstract so that the reader could focus on the main character’s pain and difficulty to move on.

This was a gorgeous graphic novel. Zoe said it was the graphic novel she recommends to everyone so I thought I’d give it a go.

I loved the road trip feel of the book, the long open ended conversations that start and peter out at random intervals, the beautiful skies, the snacks, staring out of windows. This definitely captured the feeling of long drives at night.

I thought the magical realism worked really well, being just strange enough to be brushed off at first, and then gradually getting stranger and stranger as the book goes on. I want to read the book again to feel how the magical landscape ties in with the emotions and conversations as they go along.

The darker themes were dealt with well. Things were touched on sensitively and honestly, and I felt that there was real depth in spite of the simplicity of the medium. The characters were very believable and I believed that they would open up to each other in the ways that they did, and at the moments that they did.

Overall I thought this book was really moving and interesting and believable, and the art was gorgeous, and the moments of brightness and humour around coming out (and the cat) balanced it really well.

Another reviewer said it’s moody without be gloomy and I totally agree. Even through all the emotion, there’s always a sense of hope and support and goodness.

Also the villains are terrifying
