This graphic novel was extremely moving, mixing discovery about one’s sexuality, grief and trauma recovery from sexual assault, it captures really well the magic behind new hopes but also the gloominess of sadness.
In this story, a cat is the companion of new directions, helping two girls follow their own paths and escaping their past.

I really loved the symbolism of the story but, as always with graphic novels, I found it to evasive, especially on the cat’s magic abilities.
Nonetheless, I think it was very necessary for the story to keep this element a little more abstract so that the reader could focus on the main character’s pain and difficulty to move on.

A favorite reviewer loves Tillie Walden so much I had to give this a go, and I’m so glad I did! Even as an ebook on my dinky phone, the art reached out and grabbed me. I love how the uncanny mixed with the real-feeling stakes for our queer protagonists on their adventure. And of course, kitties! Be careful reading it if you’re especially sensitive to mentions of sexual trauma. This was handled beautifully but it’s there and worth warning you about so Meemaw’s Sweet Babies can take care of their sweet horts! ❤️ four taters 🥔🥔🥔🥔/🥔🥔🥔🥔🥔

Stunning art (Cannot stress enough how gorgeous!) but composition and design made it tough to follow at certain points.
Speech bubble order was not always clear, feel like I couldn't find the right panel pacing, and both girls look so similar that I confused them for a solid third of the book.
All technical critques though, the actual story was a poignant one that I'm grateful exists. Shed a few tears.

This graphic novel follows Lou an Bea as they both try to run away from their lives. Both are lesbians and it focuses on the familial/friendship bond they develop through this journey, supporting each other. The vivid palette and fantastical atmospheres are once again one of Walden's strongest points. Even the most simple panels are so gorgeous and full of though. I especially love the use of silences and blank spaces when the narrative required it. Nonetheless, I feel like more character exploration and dialogues could have helped me understand and love Lou, Bea and Diamond (the adorable cat they find) more. It is a cozy queer read but it also briefly deals with a heavy topic: sexual assault, so beware of it before reading it. Overall, I really like Walden's artwork (especially 'On a Sunbeam') and I would love to read more.
