Książka, która powinna znaleźć się również w polskim kanonie lektur, tak jak znalazła się w amerykańskim.
Probably would not have read this if it wasn’t for one of my college classes. I understand the historical significance of the book but this book is dated. We live in a time frame there are hundreds of books that are written by Black people that tell the story of their experiences. I would recommend reading those over this.
So much to think about, especially given the current climate... we've not made the strides we think we have
I had to change my rating from 4 to 5 only because I could not stop thinkig about this book!
This book had me hooked from the start. Over 50 years since Griffin embarked on his journey yet the prejudice he experience and witnessed still resonates today.
This book was difficult to put down. His novel like diary entries had me captivated. However, though the writing was good, the content itself wasn't wow for me. A white man undergoes medical darkening to experience being black and then (gasp!) life is hard? I appreciate the environment in which this book was released and how difficult it was for him to do this in the late 50s. Especially with how eye opening and ground breaking this was for white people to read and experience. However, I'm not entirely sold on his project and therefore, was tough to give it beyond a three star rating.
This is a great book, told in a riveting voice. It must have blown people away when it first came out. The ideas were less surprising to me; when I read it in the nineties, the evils of racism were already well-documented. Still, though, it's always important to remember that this problem hasn't gone away, and for this reason, Black Like Me is as important as ever.
It it has been a very, very long time since I read this book. I just recently realized I didn't have it recorded. I was a white 14 year old female (I'm still white and still female but a very far cry from the age of 14) who wanted to gain a better understanding of what blacks were up against. (and still are) Before I get criticized for reading a book about the black experience written by a white man, let me tell you that since then, I continue to seek out books about racism, and not just ones by white authors.
This book clearly had an impact on me, though, and perhaps someday the elderly me will reread it.
