I hate J.K. Rowling okay now that that's over with I will begin about what might be the best book in the entire series and one of my favourite books of all time ok.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, muah chef kiss. Everything we got tidbits of in the previous books was at the forefront of this book. I would also debate with people who say Goblet of Fire was the turning point in the series that Order is really where the series takes on a new identity. This book feels more adult, it's more political/less action based and we know that this particular author, in my humble opinion, has been fumbling the bag on really important action scenes in the series. I really really enjoyed the length and pace of this book. I think that the length allowed for a really well-fleshed-out story and I kind of wish Goblet of Fire was maybe a little longer so some of the shortcomings might find the same success as this one.
Harry's PTSD from watching Cedric die and Voldemort return is really well done. He feels distant from everyone and pushes them away because he doesn't feel like anyone understands what he's experienced. He's being pushed away by Dumbledore and is overall just really frustrated about being central to what's going on in the Order of the Phoenix, and not being able to do anything. On top of that, the ministry is trying to destroy him at every toss and turn and oh oh oh Dolores Umbridge. She made me INFURIATED!!!!! Even more, than the movie, she was just terrible, banned Harry from Quidditch, severely injured Mcgonagall, and has Dumbledore banned, but has the Ministry in the palm of her hand who supports everything she does without question. It's frustrating as the reader but I think she was a really good villain, and it's hard to tell whether she just really loves order and is dedicated to the ministry or if she's aligned with the death eaters/Voldemort beyond blood purity.
I really also loved the little things that added body to the world!! We saw St. Mungos, the OWLs where the students need to start thinking of their lives beyond Hogwarts (I wish there was so much more about the different magical jobs that exist in this universe). I'm a sucker for the mundane additions in this book, the addition of more Order of the Phoenix families, more about the Black family history and some dating!
Okay, Harry is kind of an asshole in this book admittedly, he is going through Cedric's death really differently than Cho is, and she cries and Harry gets upset because he doesn't want to talk about it. She is however, a very annoying character but also Harry is not in tune with the ladies it is very clear. Cho's friend actually rats to Umbridge about the DA and Hermione puts a jinx on anyone who rats them out and has "SNEAK" written across her face in massive pimples!! I thought that was a really good addition.
It also seems like Harry has had this wall up for Snape, and rightfully so he sucks in the books, but you kind of see that realization from Harry that they're on the same side. The occlumency moment where we see Snape get humiliated during the OWLs of his own year by James and Sirius and how that impacts Harry was really interesting. I think Harry for the first time knows exactly how Snape feels, and that is why he regrets not going to her when he thinks there's no one else in the Order at Hogwarts. Harry is always overlooking Snape, Snape who sent the Order to the Department of Mysteries when he realized Harry was going after Sirius but more specifically when he realized that Voldemort is trying to lure him there. Snape really saved those kids from being murdered (they were so screwed in this scene which I really appreciated rather than a sudden saviour). Ron almost dies, and I heard in an interview a while ago that the author was intending on killing Ron in this book, and if you know that, it's very obvious where that happens. I think if she did that, Harry would just be ruined for the rest of the series.
The parts that put this book over the edge are the quotes about how Harry feels when Sirius dies; Cedric was horrifying, but Harry really feels deep loss when Sirius goes through the veil and these quotes had me closer to tears than the actual death scene:

"Harry could hear the sound of voices, students heading down to the Great Hall for an early breakfast, perhaps. It seemed impossible that there could be people in the world who still desired food, who laughed, who neither knew nor cared that Sirius Black was gone forever." (744)

"Harry was surprised to find that this information did not hurt at all. Wanting to impress Cho seemed to belong to a past that was no longer quite connected with him; so much of what he had wanted before Sirius's death felt that way these days... the week that had elapsed since he had last seen Sirius seemed to have lasted much, much longer; it stretched across two universes, the one with Sirius in it, and the one without. (762-763)

Harry and Dumbledore also have a very intense conversation where Dumbledore explains the prophecy and why it's Harry that Voldemort wants, Dumbledore makes the connection and ultimately tells Harry that "Neither can live while the other survives". It's so important and significant to the plot that if they added anything from this book to serve the movie better, I wish it was this conversation between Harry and Dumbledore.

Overall, I was just blown away by this book, the tides have turned, now everyone knows Voldemort is back and while HBP was my original fave, Order of the Phoenix has set the bar so high for the last 2 books.

Gah I forgot how completely annoying and whining and teenagery Harry is in this one. Just want to beat him upside the head so often. And Umbridge just gives me the willies. Seriously. Uck.

Bellatrix,

This is my least favorite HP book so far (2 more to go). It was so dark and hopeless. Harry and his adolescent hormones got on my damn nerves with his whining and “woe is me” attitude. Although I appreciate him growing with the story, I spent a good amount of time slapping him in my head. Umbridge was straight up abusive and should have NEVER been allowed around children. This had to have been illegal even in the wizarding world. Dumbledore, in all his wisdom was quite dumb in his decisions. I hope Half-Blood Prince is better.
