I still think Grant Morrison's stuff is a mess. Good story, but unnecessarily hard to follow.

Will have to re-read for a better review/rerating.

I'm sort of conflicted on this one, though part of that is due to the fact that I've read 16 or 17 Batman Graphic Novels in a row and I might just be Batman'd out.

On the one hand, the art style is outstanding - some of the full spread images I had to just pause and admire the lining, the colors and the shadows. Gotham in particular looks great here. Some of the Joker imagery is stellar, as well.

On the other hand, I find the images don't tell the story very well, if that makes sense. I was frequently confused about who was talking, or what the context of the images were showing. I suppose that sort of goes in line with Bruce Wayne's journey in this one, but I don't think it meshed as well as I'd liked.

I also feel like I've sort of read/seen this version of Batman story before...because I probably sort of have? Not really this specific book's fault. Still, Batman is still Batman and it's going to have to really crap the bed in order for it not to be entertaining and this was pretty entertaining.

The story was so-so. Most of the time, Morrison is a predictable hit. I preferred The Black Glove, and was expecting a deeper look into the International Club of Heroes.
Daneil's art bumped this rating from 3-stars to 4.

There are some superhero collections that you can pick up and, with only a cursory knowledge of the mythos, enjoy the story. Unfortunately, at least for me, I felt I needed to have read the stories that led up to this book before plunging into it.

The artwork is gorgeous (I found the Joker's new look particularly disturbing) and the writing is solid, but since I didn't understand the origins of the Black Glove and other characters and plot lines, it wasn't as enjoyable a read as it could have been.

The Deluxe hardcover edition is beautiful though and if I was collector, I think I'd be happy to have this on my shelf.

3 stars for the layperson, though I'm sure hardcore fans would give it a much higher rating.

Overall, I liked this. However, I think the end is really what earned this 3 stars. I was left with It was so intricate and crazy that it took a very careful reading of it just to keep everything straight.
I feel that Joker should have been more involved with the takedown of Batman, rather than this cabal of villains that we just met a little while ago.
What maybe makes me vacillate in my rating, possibly bumping it to 3.5 stars, is the epilogue, which gives a history of Batman as Alfred would have seen it. That's actually one of the things that I've wanted for awhile, it's strange to think of all the events of Batman, a comic book hero for more than 50 years, to have taken place within one lifetime, and he's in his 30s. It was interesting to take the key moments in his life and display them as a mini-biography. I liked it a lot.

So... *Spoiler!* Batman may or may not be dead, which leads into [b:Final Crisis|5173602|Final Crisis|Grant Morrison|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1267344779s/5173602.jpg|5240667].

4.5/5.

More great stuff from Morrison's run on Batman. Looking forward to continuing it.
