dracula starts off incredibly gripping in the section journaled by jonathan- then everything after that gets progressively less interesting. good GOD this book goes slow. the second half is padded with so many long meandering bullshit paragraphs that i gave up. nawt worth it. maybe i’ll go back one day, but not now.
the concept is genuinely super interesting, to give stoker credit, but the way he executes it takes so many interesting things out for such a large portion of the book. to set up this whole creepy castle and immediately leave it until the finale is such a poor choice. all the men, with the exception of van helsing, are genuinely so bland and could be substituted for any of the others personality wise and you’d never notice. though quincey is pretty cool at times which is nice. just criminally underused. ALL the characters talk the same, write the same, etc so discerning the perspective of any given chapter is unreasonably difficult.
also the ladies :( i’m aware that gothic literature can be sexism city sometimes but this gets egregious. the characterization of lucy vs mina, the way mina is propped up as superior because she’s useful to men, is better than lucy because she isn’t promiscuous and settles down in the end… blegh. not my cup of tea to read about for several hundred pages

Hosszabb volt, mint amire szükség lett volna és lassabb is, mint vártam, de ettől eltekintve amúgy nem volt ez rossz.
