I enjoyed the prose and will read more Tyler for sure. Wish I'd learned more about the daughters and daughter in law and less about Denny. The focus on men was a bit exhausting.

Deftly handled family saga tracing one family and one house through three generations. Interesting and believable characters.
No hesitation in giving this 5 stars. A wonderful book. Anne Tyler's writing is beautiful and her characterisation second to none. If any of these characters turned up on my doorstep I would know them in an instant and feel I'd known them all my life.
It may feel at first like just an ordinary tale of an ordinary family but extra- ordinary writing brings it alive. You can't speed read it, you need to take in every single word or you'll miss something vital. Stick with it & it will stick with you, the best book I've read in a long time & I didn't want it to end.
