Deftly handled family saga tracing one family and one house through three generations. Interesting and believable characters.

No hesitation in giving this 5 stars. A wonderful book. Anne Tyler's writing is beautiful and her characterisation second to none. If any of these characters turned up on my doorstep I would know them in an instant and feel I'd known them all my life.

It may feel at first like just an ordinary tale of an ordinary family but extra- ordinary writing brings it alive. You can't speed read it, you need to take in every single word or you'll miss something vital. Stick with it & it will stick with you, the best book I've read in a long time & I didn't want it to end.

This is a story about a house and its messed up family. The end. ........................
I think the story of MY house and MY messed up family truncates this one any time, any day-- and twice on Sundays! Not worth the time!

Anne Tyler is one of my favorite authors, and her latest book did not disappoint me at all. Her characters are always nuanced and layered and flawed. Her writing is always impeccable and descriptive. Rumor has it this is her final book? Noooo! I loved the way this book time-traveled, giving glimpses of the three generations of the family, and providing slow and steady insights at just the right pace, making the characters' motivations all the more interesting and rich. I simply loved it.
