Idk why I torture myself like this, but like I said I'm nosy. This book just felt like it dragged and dragged and went in circles. Not a big fan of JLA's style of storytelling where every information is stuffed in every conversation which never feel natural as a result. Not only that, but JLA also really loves bashing you in the head again and again repeating the same things we already read about again and again to the point that it's mind numbingly irritating and boring. I didn't really feel attached to the characters here, everyone was just thinking the same things and doing the same things. There didn't feel like substantial growth beyond Nyktos accomodating Sera and them just being so in love with each other, as they say.
Sera herself was so frustrating the entire book. Her repeatedly going against Ash telling her to stay inside when there's some big bad threat outside only for her to come out of the battle with only minor injuries isn't cute, it just cheapened the stakes and made everything look trivial. Dumbing everything down to make the heroine look badass doesn't make her badass at all. It just makes everything including her stupid. It's the same with herbringing people back to life left and right. I thought there was supposed to be big bad consequences when she does it and that she's not supposed to do it anymore? But nope. She does it like 2 more times because fuck it we ball apparently.
The ending was okay. Big plot twist but the main villain ended up feeling cartoony paired with the classic JLA dialogue infodump. Idk I think it's the speech. The modern vernacular threw me off and turned me off as it also did for the rest of the characters. None of them really felt distinct because of it.
Now will I still read the next book?..........maybe.

4.5- this is not a well structured review but idgaf. I love the relationship and the tension and the dialogue between Ash and Sera. I did find the foul language and some of the casual speech to take away from the fantasy period but I don’t really care- I’m not a purest. I could’ve used longer spice scenes lol but they were still great. I definitely love Ash & Sera more than Cas & Poppy. I’m dying to learn more about Kolis- give me his story- what was his side of the whole Mycella history?? And I really want to hear about the origins of the wolven- barely teases this.

I don’t even care what JLA writes in these series at this point, I’m gonna read it and I’m gonna like it by the end. Alas, now I spend 6 more months begging her for my next fix.
