Men in Black meets Harry Potter.
This will prove very popular, I feel. With elements of a familiar young wizard's story and world, with monsters and villains and plots, and with a diverse cast that give a wide readership a new heroine to root for, this has a lot going for it.
Amari experiences a lot of prejudice and bullying for being the 'scholarship kid' at a school where mainly privileged children go. She's already suffering the loss of her beloved elder brother, missing for several months. And now she's looking at exclusion for standing up for herself.
She realises that her brother may have been hiding a lot from her though, after mysterious objects and people turn up, and she finds herself nominated, by him, to join a new academic establishment... a magical one.
With intolerance and bullying still at play, but now with magical powers, creatures and cultures coming at her from all sides, it's a 'magic school' story with the initiation of Men in Black. And Amari wants in, if it can help her find out what happened to Quintin, who she knows isn't dead, but deeply involved in this world.
An enjoyable story to listen to, Amari is voiced well and sounds her age, the Audible copy moves quickly though most readers may prefer to read this at their own pace.
The elements you expect in this kind of story are there - mentors, friends and enemies at school, challenges and trials, powers and lessons, teachers and of course villains to be thwarted with teamwork.
I enjoyed the way the author built a world around Amari that can be followed up in future stories, the elements are in place for a whole series to continue this first episode. She's a bright, brave and inspiring young protagonist that gives readers a new sort of hero to root for.
Lots of fun, plenty of Potter-like familiarity with lots of different features that make this fresh and current.

This book is frequently recommended as a read alike for Harry Potter or Percy Jackson and I would say that is entirely accurate. Amari is pulled into a fantasy world where there is danger and intrigue as well as Bullies surprisingly like the ones at her regular school. Highly recommend for middle grade fantasy readers as well as adults.

Na úvod je asi nejdůležitější zdůraznit, že se jedná o příběh určený primárně dětem a tudíž se v něm objevují prvky příslušící tomuto žánru. Příběh je vyprávěn v ich-formě a dostává se nám tedy autentického stylu vyprávění z pohledu puberťačky. Tento styl vyprávění je zároveň skvělý také v tom, že Amari, stejně jako my, o nadpřirozeném světě vklíněném do toho našeho a jeho chodu nic neví, a tudíž při čtení zažíváme stejné či podobné pocity jako hlavní hrdinka.
Myslím, že už z popisu děje je jasné, že se kniha potýká hned s několika tématy, které nejsou úplně snadné. Řeší se zde původ, barva pleti, setkáváme se s příběhem matky samoživitelky i a faktem, že když se člověk narodí do "dobré" rodiny, má prostě o dost víc štěstí než ostatní. V určitých chvílích se dostáváme až tak trochu na tenký led,kdy hrozí větší konflikt. Nicméně Amari ze sebe i přes nepřízeň osudu rozhodně nedělá žádnou chudinku, na naopak, je to velká bojovnice, která si stojí za svými názory a rozhodnutími, a nenechá se od ostatních beztrestně ponižovat.
Velmi důležitými postavami v příběhu jsou také Amariini přátelé. Jednou z jejích kamarádek se například stane drakodlačice Elsie, která má velké nadání pro vynalézání všelijakých technických zlepšováků. Amari zde také najde kamaráda, od kterého by na první pohled spojenectví vůbec nečekala.
Příběh je plný překvapení a zvratů, které jsou často nepředvídatelné, a neustále čtenáře udržují v napětí a zvědavosti. Je zde hodně akce, často jsou demonstrovány magické schopnosti jednotlivých dětí i dospělých. Dozvídáme se spoustu zajímavostí z nadpřirozeného světa a také jeho propojení s naším běžným světem prostřednictvím vysvětlení nejrůznějších událostí, které byly tak trochu zakamuflovány v něco jiného.
Na mě osobně byly některé scény až trochu přehnané a některé vynálezy působily trochu infantilně, stejně tak mi trochu vadil překlad některých jmen a pojmenování z angličtiny, nicméně opravdu nepatřím do cílové skupiny čtenářů. Umím si představit, že před 15 lety bych z knihy byla naprosto unešená. Velkým plusem jsou také pěkné ilustrace doprovázející začátek každé kapitoly.
Knihu bych rozhodně doporučila všem fanouškům magie a nadpřirozena (i těm dospělým), kteří si rádi přečtou příběh o velké odvaze a boji "dobra" proti "zlu."

i knowww 3 stars wtf i hate myself too it's okay. but no in all seriousness, the discussions about where Amari came from and all the metaphors that came with that involving the fantasy elements were brilliant. the plot itself i didnt care for, as i tend to not be a fan of sibling stories because I'm an only child so it's hard to relate. I think a huge reason i couldnt stay focused, however, is the audiobook in this case. this is one of those where i think i would've liked it more if i read it physically.
