Well! Even with it's simplistic plot, I did not see the major twist at the end coming until Glinda asked Mombi her questions! I truly enjoyed Jack Pumpkinhead as a character. He was fun to read and had funny things to say. I look forward to reading on in the series, as I believe Tip and Ozma will be characters in other books. :)

This is a beautiful edition of the book, a faithful reproduction of the original, using the art deco-style typography and John R. Neill's whimsical illustrations.

I seem to say that every Oz book is my favorite, and I suppose that speaks to the strength of the series. What I really enjoyed about this book as a child is that I had actually read "Ozma of Oz" (third in the series) before this one. So I had no idea that this story would tell us how Ozma arrived on the scene. What a fantastic surprise!

Once again, Baum shows us why he is the master of fantasy, with this sequel. In many ways, I enjoy this book much more than "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz." The scene when the unforgettable character, Jack Pumpkinhead, enters the court of the Scarecrow will split your belly as if you were the straw man himself. It's a scene of intelligently-written laughs, and I always use this chapter of the book as a model with my creative writing students to demonstrate how to craft humor.

Of course, as someone who enjoys puns (especially bad ones), I also relish every line of the Wogglebug in this book.

I guess the final thing to say is that I loved Jack Pumpkinhead as a boy so much that I made my own version of him to stand outside my house on Halloween.

I'm afraid it might have been spoiled for me as I was also listening to a commentary about how Baum had been asked to create additional books, and that was his livelihood. It just seemed thrown together with no real purpose or plot. There was little character development for the returning characters.

I will finish the next twelve, but begrudgingly unless this was an outlier in quality.

This felt more kid-friendly than the first book. Less violent. More silly and whimsical. I enjoyed that, however curious it may be for the change. The bringing to life of new creatures and all there different personalities was rather amusing. I wish the revolt had a bit more...something... to it. Jinjur ended up as a flat character for me. I also felt Tip's character started out strong, but as the party grew, he diminished a bit too much. Pumpkinhead was a fun one!
adventurous dark fast-paced

My daughter is really digging the land of Oz. Who am I to let her down? Bring on book three!

We just finished reading this as our night-night book. I liked the puns throughout the book. I also liked General Jinjur.

I probably prefer The Wonderful Wizard of Oz because of the movie. This book reads well as a children's book and the adventure is well thought out and has some twists. I think this truly is the definition of a storybook, chapters are short and interesting, the story keeps you intrigued, and it's set in fantasy where anything can happen.
