I remember greatly enjoying the Oz books a kid, and jumped on the chance to re-read them via Substack. Very interesting to read them as an adult.

Bruh. You did Jack Pumpkinhead dirty. Why didn't he get a HEA?

That aside, these books are super fun and cute, and I don't understand why more people don't talk about them or recommend them alongside the ol-faithfuls like Narnia, Harry Potter, etc etc.

it's hard to live up to the wonderfulness of the original, but this book has probably the sweetest character of all, Jack Pumpkinhead.

It took a while for this book to get going.. but once the girl army showed up it seemed to pick up and I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of gender issues that were addressed in this story.

"Everything in life is unusual until you get accustomed to it"

Not as good as the original, but still pretty fun. It was written a long time ago so it's hard to fault the author too much, but this book was definitely super sexist. Still going to read the next one, but it had moments where it was a little too cheesy.

bought for Aoife.
Loving this book. We started reading it on Easter (the book was in the Easter basket) and read half of it over the course of the day. Even the 10 year old boys would stop and listen whenever we were reading it. I tried so hard to find an illustrated copy of this story (not sure why I couldn't! It is a classic book with original illustrations, why is almost every copy in print missing the illustrations?!) But even at 6 the story is exciting enough that Aoife can listen and enjoy it without any pictures. I will try to get an illustrated copy of the next one, though.
