This was he 2nd chapter book Jocelyn & I read together. It had a few illustrations which helped hold her attention. She enjoyed the fantastical elements and the journeys the characters took. She was enthralled with the plot twist at the end with Ozma.
There were some elements that were awfully sexist, but I suppose that is to be expected for the time period. Jinjur’s army of spoiled girls armed with knitting needles and obsessed with jewelry for example, weren’t my favorite parts. However, the idea of an all female army facing another, Glinda’s later on (who were true warriors) was pretty awesome.
One character has undergone a sex change of sorts to evade capture. At the time it was written I’m sure the spell surrounding the change neutralizes the social transgression, but to a modern reader it raises interesting questions about transgender identity and gender identity-what would life be like as a different gender? This all happens in just a few pages and isn’t the focus by any means, but it definitely made me pause.

I wasn't much convinced at first, but it gets really good the more you read. I can definitely understand why Baum is seen as a feminist, and for the time when he wrote these books he made a really great portrayal of women.
I love how much is said implicitly about the characters, just like in the previous book : for instance, one is lead to understand that Tip, just like Dorothy, may be the leader of the group, he is far from being flawless, and has much to learn from the other characters.
Finally, a word about the end :

awesome ! I love how Tip's transformation to Ozma is shown to be natural, and the fact that she remains the same person, only her gender has changed.

It was okay, I was really looking forward to this book, cause I loved the Wizard of Oz so much! But this one fell alittle flat. For me, sadly. I’m still going to read on and read the next one Ozma of Oz but it was nice seeing a lot of the old new characters again: Scarecrow, TinMan and Glinda. 3/5

The book was ok, but I just wasn’t excited about it enough to continue with it. Too many other books to read which have more appeal.
