This novel was first published in 1992 and is the author's first. It's also the first in the Commissario Brunetti mystery series.
If you're looking for action and a fast paced mystery, this book isn't for you. The crime happens within the first 10 pages. The next 342 pages is a series of police interviews of people connected with the victim and his past. It is definitely character-driven. Although the pace of the story is very slow, I couldn't put the book down as I wanted to find out who had committed the crime and why. I however found this read a little bit frustrating as I wanted more action!

An easy, quick read. Very atmospheric, and I love the central character and his relationship with his wife.
