Darker and creepier than the first book- actually really bloody and brutal, more fitting of the horror genre. There was so many layers to this story. Subject matter was very appealing to the libertarian in me. It’s clear the author is supportive of conspiracy theories regarding the evil that lurks in positions of power which I do not totally find theologically sound, but I enjoyed the pace of this books nonetheless.

This book was better than the first one! The story was more compelling and the danger of the situations felt more realistic. I liked how characters from the first book made cameos in this one but didn't take over the story.
This is like watching the Satanic Panic reemerge in real time. While it was a well-written book, it really can't be ignored that some Christians (especially in the USA) read this and think that invisible "spiritual" warfare it portrays is actually happening. No surprise then that the woman in this story is a dirty sinner who murdered her own child - gasp! But isn't it amazing how the authors didn't make her already a Christian like Deana Laney who believed that God had told her the world was going to end and "she had to get her house in order," which included killing her children. Or Dena Schlosser, who wanted to "give her children to God". Or Matthew Taylor Coleman, who believed his his 2-year-old son and 10-month-old daughter were evil and would bring about the end of the world so he shot them in the chest with a spear gun. Instead she is a terrible sinner who ultimately accepts Jesus and gets forgiven etc etc. If this story was just standing on its own, it would be interesting, but it's impossible at this point to ignore that it feeds into some people's actual ideas of what is real and what is not. That makes it, if anything, very sad and disturbing.
A stunning sequel to This Present Darkness where there's a whole new plot against another town and the forces of darkness have got everything pretty much in control.
It took a little while for me to find out where the story was headed and it's relation to the previous book, but I'm glad I stuck with it as it was immensely satisfying. The story is clearly written with its message on the surface and not hidden behind metaphor or parable. Emotional in places as well.

Not as good as this present darkness but still thought provoking.
