I didn't really enjoy this book. It has a wide cast of underdeveloped characters and not enough emotional pull. I also felt like I struggled to find and be invested in the plot of this book. I really liked the concept and was excited to read a women's prison book but this just didn't do it for me.

This book deserves all the hype it's received so far. Kushner aims right at the things she needs to say, and drills and drills until she hits gold.

A story of socioeconomics, race, crime and justice where nothing at all happens. I couldn’t stop reading the book but not in an unputdownable sense, in a ‘there has to be something more’ and ‘something is going to happen’ sense. All the way through I was longing for something to just happen. And all the way through, nothing did.

Really enjoyed the style of writing and fast-paced narrative. Though now I’ll have to rewatch OITNB to make up for the rushed ending… which is not necessarily a bad thing.

Would be keen for a second instalment, which is something I rarely say, but the author did a great job at making you care about the stories of even the most minor characters.

4.5!
