Entertaining but i prefer Abnett's prose personally.
This book is eventful, and the path of Horus and his corruption is set.
Some of the human characters we got to know in Horus rising get a bit more development, and show more significance.
I can also more greatly appreciate the insidious cunning for which first chaplain Erebus is infamous.
I enjoyed the prose and the action of the book, and there was enough dialogue and intrigue to provide good context and reason for the action.
The ending of the book also lays a good foundation for which the next book can start, and it ignites a motivation for me to start it soon.

This was my second "reading" of this book, only this time I listened to it. Overall, this feels very much so like the middle of a trilogy. It isn't bad, but compared to the first book, it lacks as clear a direction.
A great deal of time also is reasonably spent with Horus and his "dream" which will decide which path he takes, but this makes the other parts of the narrative being told at the same time feel disjointed.
The best part of this book is the evolution of the Remebrancers; however, the parts with the Space Marines feel less well fleshed out.
If the first book hadn't been so strong, this one may not have stood out starkly. It was enjoyable, but definitely the weakest of the trilogy

What must it be like, to watch the slow collapse of a great man into a lesser one? Would it be destined to happen or a spiral of simply chance?
I was quite surprised about the how engaging this book truly is. While it may not have the phenomenal detail of the first with respect to character development and dialog, McNeill has the good fortune to be picking up the story at the apex of the turning point of Humanity in the world of Warhammer 30k's universe. Quite literally a curtain call for the previous age of humanity and the start of a new one.
With nearly decades worth of previous work and stories across all mediums, the world of Warhammer 30k &40k is rich with detail and quick to paint the brutal struggle for survival in a universe so apathetic to humanity. McNeill drags you up close to the tragedy of humans, and leave you wonder about all of the what ifs.
If you're new to Warhammer 40k, I would recommend AGAINST starting with The Horus Heresy series because of how much is expected that you already know about the background, but if you are or have ever been curious about W40k, this has to be on the list of required readings.

The middle portion of this book was sci-fi horror glory.

Biased review - I love Warhammer in all aspects, so this second installation of the Horus Heresy is stellar in all respects in my opinion. Just one of the many building blocks for the vast lore of the Warhammer universe.
I suggest you read these first few books to get acquainted with happenings in the comparatively cheerful 31st millennium of the Imperium, which led to the creation of the gothic and oppressive conditions of life for the inhabitants of the universe in the future, 10000 years later.

These books are my guilty pleasure really. They're not amazingly written or super-deep or anything but sometimes you just want some trashy-geeky sci-fi goodness.
This one covers Horus's death and betrayal and his subsequent turn to chaos.
