The second volume of the Cazalet chronicles finds the reader in 1940 as the phoney war gradually transitions into the blitz and the family are retreating to their country home. The book centres on the experiences of three teenage daughters of the separate Cazalet brothers.
So Louise , now 16, is moving away from her younger siblings and cousins and going to a cookery school then into a career in acting by way of a bizarre drama colege. In the cookery school she acquires a spirited and unusual friend, Stella, whose artistic family contrast dramatically with Louise's own traditional English origins. Louise also is now emerging as a woman and it is the relationship with her father Edward which , as with book 1, is troubling and , together with womanising creates an unsympathetic portrait of this man emerging as head of the families prosperous wood milling business. Edward's long suffering wife Villy also has to cope with her own difficulties with a mother who is unwell and an unrequited passion for a European pianist. As we leave Louise she has begun what seems a very unlikely relationship with a single older man in the navy which seems doomed for disaster in the future.
Meanwhile Polly and Clary, best friends and cousins, daughters of Hugh and Rupert respectively, at 14 are changing but coping with their own family dramas. Rupert , having enlisted in the navy has been lost at sea while Clary's step mother Zoe is expecting a baby. Clary refuses to accept her father is dead despite everyone else coming to terms with the loss. Polly has to cope with the unspecified illness of her mother which neither Sybil or Hugh seem to want to share with each other or their daughter.
The voices of the three girls are well portrayed and each section pulled me in to their world allowing different perspectives on this curiously addictive family.
The chapters are book ended with the family as a whole which allows views of all parts including the grandparents, aunt Rachel, as well as household staff, tutor and all the cousins.
When I picked this volume up and opened the pages to see dense writing with tiny print my heart initially sank , but once I settled back into this world it was one I did not wish to leave and with 3 more volumes I am looking forward to returning soon.

PodrĂa atreverme a decir que es una de mis mejores lecturas esta saga.
Parece que no sucede nada, pero pasa de todo en la familia cazalet, y si sucede de todo
