Addictive like a soap opera -- *with*, admittedly some of the literary drawbacks of that genre. Towards the end, it started to invite diagonal reading, frankly. And to think there would be three more volumes to go... and a potentially unending series when the niece takes over, as she is reported to start doing next year. Maybe give it a rest...
Oh, I just love this series! I thought I might get bored with it, but somehow I find myself fascinated with the everyday details of family life during the early years of WWII. I can't write a rational, considered review because it is sheer pleasure. All the characters are captivating and real, even the unlikeable ones. I am going to have to ration myself and not gallop through the rest. Difficult as this one ends on a cliffhanger.
Oh, but one more thing: I especially loved the character development of Zoe and Louise -- so believable and well done.

You know what else I love about EJH and the Cazalet Chronicles? The way she zips into almost everyone's brain. There are her main characters (in this book, the three oldest girl cousins, Louise, Polly and Clary). But you also get little paragraphs from the cook and the driver and from the friend of the family, and from the great-aunts who annoy the hell out of everyone else, and from the grown-up niece who's just had a scandalous abortion and had to give up her affair with a married man. It's so complete and so generous and you learn to feel sad and/or sympathetic for almost everyone. (Miss Milliment! I will always love Miss Milliment, who has no money or home and who is worried about being able to find "clothes for the larger person" in wartime Hastings.) Also, Howard had the most amazing ear for dialogue. Not a single remark in this book feels misjudged or out of key. Again I say, it's like Downton Abbey might have been if Downton Abbey hadn't been so utterly awful (and had been just a touch more middle-class).
