This was an interestingly creepy yet fairly predictable book. I don't think I would have finished it had I been reading it instead of listening to it. I liked the first half of the book more so than the last part. The ending seemed a little forced and rushed. I was also left with some unanswered questions such as is the Pole really safe or are there still creatures lurking? Will Eleanor and Michael be happy together? I don't feel like the book really wrapped up all the necesssary story lines. Overall, it was an ok book for my commute.

I read this book upon a recommendation from the local librarian at the library. It was definitely a well written book. Robert Masello is an exceptional author and even wrote books on how to write. He did very well at painting pictures with words and made me feel like I was actually there in the Antarctic with the characters. I was a little disappointed with the ending though. It seemed like the last 100 pages were rushed and I would have liked to have read more about what happened after they got back to the US. Otherwise I did enjoy the book and felt it was nicely written.

This is a vampire love story worth your time, scratched the Dracula itch and was adventurous and tragic yet it had a satisfying and happy end.

I liked the plot of this story, but for some reason I had a hard time getting through it. It took me about twice as long to read it as it should have for some reason. But it was pretty interesting, especially the detail to the South Pole and what goes on there in the way of research and living where there is 6 mos of sun and 6 mos of darkness. I also liked the detail to Sinclair and Eleanor's part of the story, their life stories. It ended a bit abruptly for me. I would like to see what happens with Eleanor in the future, and what, if any affects the serum will have on her.

Way anti-climactic ending and I'm still not sure how I feel about it, but I enjoyed the read.

Trying to put his life together after a tragedy, journalist Michael Wilde journeys to the South Pole. At the bottom of the world, he hopes to find a story and begin his life again. Then, on a routine dive, he discovers makes an amazing discovery: a man and woman, bound together by chains, frozen in a block of ice. He expects nothing more than a fantastic story from the discovery; perhaps some fame. But nothing could prepare him for what would happen once the bodies were free.

This book is about vampires, which is why I read it. I thought the idea was incredibly interesting: vampires frozen in ice, thawed out hundreds of years later in a place with a limited food supply. I wasn't sure if it was going to be straight up horror or more paranormal (which is what it turned out to be), but I was interested in how it would play out.

The set up to the book is very well written. The characters are well drawn, the journey to the pole compelling, and then descriptions of life in Antarctica were fascinating. However, I felt the book never really paid off. It had a long, detailed set up, but nothing ever seemed to go anywhere. I also found the ending disappointing. However, I might give the book another chance just because I did like the characters and world building so much. Maybe on a second read through, it will be more satisfying.

Set in the arctic a bunch of researchers/ journalists find a pair of lovers chained together and entombed in ice under the sea. Once thawed they are found to be the source of a deadly contagion.
I wanted to like this as the premise was intriging but it was just too wordy and suffered from a lack of pace and towards the middle I began skim reading. Good characterisation though.

It was well written but took to long to get to the point and could have been shorter by a couple hundred pages and still been great.
