I wouldn't call this book cozy per se, because it has a huge amount of trigger warnings and situations full of tension but it's absolutely full of heart. The group of characters is absolutely lovely and very queer, the relationships between them and the side characters are also great. The writing style is light and a little snarky - it reminded me of Howl's Moving Castle and books by T. Kingfisher, so if you like that, absolutely check this out.

This book was truly a delight. It has all the typical tropes of a fantasy novel— found family, a Chosen One, magical lore— but the biggest twist is the fact that the Chosen One is an elderly woman, and truly so much warmth and love follows from that fact. Reading this book felt like a warm hug, but not in a kitschy kind of way— The stakes and the emotional journeys are very real, and the big plot twist, while likely something that’s easily enough predicted by anyone genre-savvy, still managed to take me by surprise & I was absolutely pleased to see the resolution.

I absolutely recommend this book to anyone, but especially folks looking for a fresh take on the fantasy genre or anyone in need of a little bit of warmth, hope, or love in their life.

DID NOT FINISH: 47%

This debut young author has a very odd erroneous idea of what orderlies do at nursing homes (hint: they do not perform medical assessments).
Underbaked.

When I read this book’s synopsis, I was really interested to read the end results. And wow, I have no words. It was an absolute roller coaster. I was expecting Edna Fisher to wield the sword and kill Red. However, I was not expecting multiple plot twists from the people she was friends with to Red being her son.
I was also not expecting the kiss between Benjamin and Kiernan. When Kiernan got seriously injured, I thought he would not make it. I thought it would be like the movie scene when someone dies in another person’s arms as they watch sobbing. Fortunately, Kiernan survived.
I like this book since the topic of magic has a special place in my heart. Added bonus for dragons. Besides that, the author does a really good job of developing the characters and also writing the story from the perspective of multiple characters.
