this book was much better than the first book. it took until i was like 60% into the book for me to really become invested finally but i enjoyed it overall.
it does end with nox and amaris separated AGAIN after only being together for like two chapters AGAIN so like. kind of annoying idk and the plot twists felt a little forced to move the story along

“There was a safety in knowing men as my enemy.” Nox nearly choked on the statement. “Hate is a luxury. Do you understand what I mean?” He shook his head to tell her he didn’t understand.

Watching Nox go from a woman hardened by the abuse of man and religion and power was my favorite part, and the growth was so well placed. Watching her grow to trust Ash and Malik was so cute.

Amaris, similarly, grows into herself, and while I was initially excited for her relationship with Nox to grow, I found myself really really enjoying her travels with Gadriel.

I think most second books suffer quite a bit from trying to fill the gaps between the beginning and end, but this one felt like a second first book. Instead of the growing friendship between Amaris and Nox, Amaris and Ash, etc, we watch Nox become friends with the Reevers and Amaris with Gadriel.

slow-paced

Good, but also predictable and the drawn out lack of communication was extremely annoying, but I realize essential to the plot.

The world building is very interesting, there are a lot of good fantasy elements here.  i like the characters and their dynamic. The main relationship that the two main characters yearn for feels underdeveloped. There are side relationships that have more concrete development than the main, the majority of the romantic relationship happens as children then they are separated and it’s not explored enough to make the weight of the relationship feel like it grounds the story.
