A very high four stars. My best read of the year so far.

I did not expect this story to suck me in as it did so quickly. I was soon invested and curious to see what would happen. I read this book in only two sittings which I have not been able to achieve in a while.

The atmosphere was very enriching and Ruth Ware's writing style was very easy to read which I enjoyed. I do not normally read thrillers, so I did not expect who the killer actually was.

The way Liz presented herself as the killer was truly horrifying in its own way. Believing herself to be a victim, but also not shying away from the need to kill. Even in the end, when Liz caught Erin trying to flee through the window, she didn't scream or shout. She just snarled like an animal and mutely tried to stop Erin from leaving.

She was silent and devoid of emotion. A psychopath. An owl sent to hunt its prey.

A truly chilling read which I enjoyed very much!

Book Review: One By One
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Getting snowed in at a luxurious but isolated mountain chalet might sound idyllic—until you realize you’re trapped with your coworkers and one of them is a murderer.

In One By One, Ruth Ware delivers a modern take on the classic locked-room mystery. A corporate retreat for employees of Snoop, a trendy music app, turns deadly when an avalanche cuts them off from the outside world. With tensions already running high over an impending company sale, the group soon faces a far greater crisis: people start disappearing, and a killer is among them.

The novel is told from the alternating perspectives of Erin, a chalet employee with secrets of her own, and Liz, an ex-Snoop employee with an outsider status and a crucial vote in the company’s future. As the bodies pile up, suspicions shift, and Ware keeps readers guessing about who will make it out alive.

Ware introduces a dozen characters quickly, which may require a bit of effort to keep them all straight. But once the key players become clear, the book unfolds with a mix of slow-burning tension and fast-paced moments of terror. While the first half focuses on character dynamics and the eerie isolation of the setting, the final act ramps up into a gripping and suspenseful conclusion.

The remote chalet setting is perfect for a thriller, and Ware excels at crafting an atmosphere of claustrophobic dread. Fans of Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None will find plenty to enjoy here, as Ware plays with classic mystery tropes while giving them a fresh, tech-world twist. Though some character development feels thin, One By One is an engaging and entertaining thriller, ideal for readers looking for a chilling escape.

A tense, atmospheric page-turner that will keep you guessing. Perfect for fans of locked-room mysteries and corporate drama with a deadly edge.
