This debut novel by Kirthana Ramisetti blew me away. The writing was phenomenal. The story was multi-faceted. The characters were complex… the list goes on. I also love a good setting — Dava’s last day was spent with her family at her secluded island house. The Dava Shastri, one of the world’s wealthiest women, had to navigate life in the public eye — so it was no surprise that secrets would be revealed.

The story had both funny and heartbreaking undertones at times. My only dislike was that I didn’t really connect with any of the characters. However, I loved reading a book with a main character in their 70s. Dava Shastri’s Last Day explores wealth in the public eye, love, loss, and family.

4.5 stars!

Only downfall for me was the constant back and forth in the middle and end; not that it didn’t make sense with what is happening in the story but sometimes it felt difficult to get back into the smoothness of the story.

Dava is dying and secludes herself and her children just before her death is announced to the public (even though she's still alive). She wants to watch the world's reaction. Her kids are horrified by this but they try to pull it together to support her. Dava has to own up to some secrets that are revealed with her "death" and the kids have to repair their relationships with each other to get through all this.

DNF. I like this premise, but with the profusion of characters, it's hard to keep everyone straight and I'm not connecting with any if them.

I'm struggling a bit to review this book as it wasn't really for me. But it was truly beautiful examining the process of grief from 6 perspectives, those of Dava, her children, and Sandi. It raises questions of morality with euthanasia and infidelity, and discusses themes like polyamory, alcoholism, and domestic abuse. I also enjoyed the multimedia at the beginning of each chapter, be it from newspaper articles or close friends to Dava. The book may have just been a bit heavy for me at the given moment, but it was honestly quite good.

It's a beautiful story about coming to terms with death and dying. Highly recommend!
