Whether you’re a novice sports fan, a die-hard fanatic or one who barely dabbles into the hobby of reading, please make this book on your extremely short list of ones to read. An incredibly well-researched book that not only dives deep for those who loves the true nature of a biography, but to remind us of a) why we love sports and b) why sports can help us better ourselves as humans in society...

Not only one of my favorite books I’ve read in the past year, but of alllllllllll tiiiiiiiiiiimes!!

Superb piece of research and fine writing style made Ali come alive in a way I had not read before, especially the later years. Such was Eig's access to nearly every living person important in the champ's life that he was in the Scottsdale, Arizona, hospital room when Ali died. I can't wait to see his collaboration with Ken Burns for their film doc on this beloved figure.

I know that this will be unpopular but I suppose I am one of the few people who never really went for Ali’s act. After this book, I am convinced he is a man who was greatly overrated as a boxer and as a “hero.” But, well-written and researched.

Fascinating and incisive, although Eig elides much of Ali's later life and provides only the meagrest accounting of some of his most celebrated fights.

I spent the whole year with this book, taking it in a few chapters with a time between other books. Every so often, I'd get to check in with Ali, laugh at some of his antics, shake my head when he's done wrong, or felt touched.

Not many words that I can come up with, honestly. The book was clearly extremely well researched, but also extremely readable. I really enjoyed it.

An intimate biography of Ali, from the beginning, focusing more on the complicated (and ever-evolving) man than on his fights, though the boxing is also documented in some detail. Eig shows us the balance of Ali's majestic athletic, charitable and political moments with his serious personal flaws, not the least of which were his overwhelming addiction to multiple women and vast sums of money. Well written and readable, Ali remains an important and powerful figure in America's history.
