Good YA book. The language was clean for ages 11-16, who I feel would be the audience. For those who were born in the 80's and are re-reading their favorite authors when they were kids (I can't be the only one), this book has the vibe of the movie April Fool's Day. I think it could get a hesitant reader more interested in reading.
The story was good, but I found the characters extremely annoying... I sort of didn’t care if they died
I LOVED Fear Street when I was in high school. I bought the books like candy and devoured them even faster. When my daughter turned 13 & wanted something to read, I thought of Fear Street - started collecting them and she's devoured them even faster than I did. I've flipped through them over the last few years and thought "wow, these are more formulaic than cozy mysteries", but they were FUN. My daughter calls them "junk food books" - good for a quick read, but won't fill you up and too many make you sick. But that's fine. They're still fun books, and I was far too excited to see a relaunch.
That being said - wow. Sorry Mr Stine, but were you paid by the word? This was the most drawn-out story I've ever heard. I thought of "And then there was one" by Agatha Christie almost right away. But I also have this hidden feeling that rather than a reLAUNCH, this is a reTELLING of a previous book. I can't think of the exact title - and it'll bug me - but I feel like this is an updated retelling of an original Fear Street book. And I gotta say - maybe it's just my age - but ... these books work much better without cell phones & google. These books were about kids getting together with their friends, getting in nasty scrapes & problems, and all ends well. Adding modern times just doesn't work. (Same is true with Nancy Drew. Those books wouldn't be nearly as exciting if Nancy could have grabbed a cell phone and called for help).
Will I read others? Yeah, probably. But I'll borrow them from the library. I won't be spending money buying them.
Even my daughter said "This book just wasn't as good as the old Fear Street".
So, "It's OK"

I loved Fear Street books so much as a tween! I'm glad Stine is back after all these year. It was a fun, easy trip down memory lane.
