"Yujin, lo manusia atau komodo, sih?" Adalah pertanyaan yang langsung muncul di kepalaku setelah aku menamatkan cerita ini.
Buat yg suka Diary of A Murderer pasti bakalan enjoy banget sama cerita satu ini. Gaya penulisan dengan POV orang ke-satu, membawa kita seolah-olah masuk ke dalam labirin. Maksud yang disampaikan pun cukup detail, terutama soal rasa takut tiap tokohnya. 👍🏻

"After all, being true to life wasn't the only way to tell a story."
The Good Son by You-Jeong Jeong followed the narration and thoughts of 25 year-old Han Yu-Jin as he discovered one morning about the cruel death of his mother and the evidences which point to him as the murderer. The rest of the book was about him uncovering the real events of the night before and important highlights of the years before, recalling the history of the family members' profiles and dynamics with him, and dealing with the present circumstances which was a nightmare that could soon be found out by people coming and going at their residence for different reasons.
My favorite reading experience of this book is the immersive storytelling of the protagonist which allows his reader to understand his thought process as he made sense of many discoveries through the prompt of various devices such as his mother's journal, his iPod music, the clock's signals, and other items he spotted around the house within certain time limits which kept readers like me glued to my seat on how he's going to deal with it. My least enjoyed reading experience of this book is having no follow-ups to some details mentioned, such as about the woman who was looking for the main character who happened to live across his house, the precise motive of the Mother or at least the final impression of Yu-jin about wearing the disliked night gown, and clearer hints of Hae-jin's thought process on giving Yu-jin around 2 more hours before going together to the police or his strong insistence to confessing at a police station instead of to the two detectives who were already at their home which could have changed the ending. But honestly, after discussing with my book club, I also realized that the vague points were also great areas of discussion with other people who similarly experienced the book.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to have a rich material to discuss with others about how we as a society can deal better with people having special psychological profiles like our protagonist Yu-jin.

This book is a very slow burn and my interest wandered at times. It has some nice twists, but it takes a long time to go anywhere. If you enjoy a slow burn novel about a disturbed young adult, it is worth a read.
