i couldn't put this down. i was somewhat disappointed with the reveal; i was hoping it would be more complex. there was some hope for a twist in the end, but it was dashed in the epilogue.
this book was interesting because the reader learns the "how" and "what" of the murder early on, and the rest of the book is occupied with "why." the author does a sleek job of switching between memories and the present, and i couldn't stop reading as i followed yu-jin in unraveling his life story. there were parts of it that felt disappointingly generic to me,.
i'm not sure how i wanted this book to end, but the final teaser wasn't satisfying to me. i wish it had ended just before the last sentence.
tw: lots of blood, very gory.

Saya galau. Antara mau membulatkan bintang 3 atau 4.
Kisahnya berlatar di Korea Selatan, sebuah kota baru fiktif dekat Incheon. Setelah prolog, cerita dibuka dengan pembunuhan sadis atas seorang perempuan, usia 50-an.
Yak apa kok malah bahas Agatha Christie lagi 😅

Great start and a strong premise that unfortunately abandons any pretense of mystery in favor of a chilling character study. Generally pretty good but a bit too light in plot and suspense. A satisfying conclusion at least brings it home.

I couldn't take my eyes off the book yet I couldn't make myself go to the next page. The curiosity to understand what was happening was so excruciating that I was on the edge the whole time.
It's not a thriller to give you scares or to be gore-y, which I appreciate a lot. I love how it goes back and forth in the protagonist's memories to understand his actions and the things that happened - I don't think it was the author's goal to make bloody depictions for shock value. The nuances in all the characters are amazing and they all have their own stories and work on their own. I don't want to spoil anything, but I feel that it is more of a physiological analysis of this family rather than a murder case.
If you're coming here thinking you will have a Stephen King-ish thriller, I would say it's definitely not the case. But it's really tasteful and well crafted.
I would only say that the ending was a little underwhelming - it could have ended without the epilogue. If we were left without knowing the consequences it would be way more interesting, or something a little more ambiguous and less defining. But these books are more about the journey and not so much about the way the story ends.

What a great book! The main character was so unlikable, yet I still wanted to know what he would do next. I didn't expect it to end that way, at least, not until really close to the end.
i didn’t see the repetition of elements as a point of weakness in this book. i feel that the details that kept repeating were to be interpreted in different ways each time, because each time they were mentioned it was in a different setting and we had more information to relate them to, such as the woman with the pink umbrella and the drunk man getting off the bus detail repeating itself multiple times until we have enough knowledge about the situation to know the truth about the two. i completely loved this book and couldn’t manage to put it down. 100% agree with whoever says that this needs a movie adaptation as well!
